Christian Brothers’ College (Pretoria) results at DHS 2008

By on March 28, 2008 in High School

In their first basketball tour to Durban, Christian Brothers College (CBC) took part in the Durban High School (DHS) International Basketball tournament 2008 in the B section from the 21 of March to the 26 March. CBC took 10 excited players on an adventure they wouldn’t forget anytime soon. The team flew to Durban where they enjoyed the hospitality of their hosts, with good food, accommodation and a Musgrave Mall at a walking distance. The tournament was well organized with great playing facilities, evenly matched pools and good referees.

CBC usually plays basketball in the 2nd and 3rd term so there was a huge break between their last Pretoria league game and this tournament. Having played a practice game before the tournament, CBC travelled to Durban with high expectations. They started the tournament with their pool games being played at Westville Boys High School, where there are two fantastic courts. With some of the players, the experience of playing indoors, with a crowd cheering was too much and fear got the better of them. They usually say that the 1st game sets the tone for the rest of the tournament, and CBC began with a 30 points defeat to Dominican convent. They followed that up with a 3 point defeat at the hands of Westville Boys High, a defeat against Portshepstone High School and in their final pool game they lost to Shooting Star College who were playing with a very limited squad.

After losing all their pool games, CBC faced their Pretoria rivals The Glen High School in a game for position. The Glen High School came out on top with a 14 point victory over their neighbors’. Their last game of the tournament was to try and avoid the wooden spoon but they didn’t manage to win the game. Although the team didn’t win any of their games while on tour and finished last on the standings, the players gained some invaluable experience and made some new friends on the tour.

The trip ended being one of frustration for their coach, Ona Moseki and their teacher, Ms Nicole Sales but the experience gained on this tour will stand them in good stead in the Pretoria league that starts in the 2nd Term. The most outstanding player on this tour for the team was Matthew Nel. CBC looks forward to going back to DHS next year, better prepared.
