The DHS team took on New Forest, playing at home for the first time in the season. The final score was 103 – 14 showing that the stayers team is up to the challenge that has been laid down by previous teams, they put their all into each game and come out victorious. Many learners at DHS have been uncertain about the strength of the new team, as it is a young team but after watching the fist few games any doubts can be laid to rest. The school can remain confidant in the promise that the team has shown thus far, for those who have not watched them yet book a courtside seat for the next thrilling encounter with St Charles coming up next week. The game, in the wake of the world cup victory was always going to be a hard one with the boys having gotten to bed late the night before. DHS dominated the opening two minutes but failed to score any points the St Benedicts team weathered the storm and came back strongly. The game swung backwards and forwards on a pendulum for the first half with both teams making mistakes and neither team taking the intuitive and capitalizing on the others mistakes, DHS closed down the fast break and forced them to play in the half court which they were unaccustomed to doing preferring to play quickly, while DHS played good defense their opponents were patient and waited for a defensive laps to score their points, if there was a 24 second shot clock it is certain that there would have forced a number of shot clock violations and turned the ball over. The wheels came off the DHS team in the third quarter and St Benedicts took their opportunities and made them count. The DHS team looked dazed and confused at times as if they did not know what they were doing. The fourth quarter started with DHS trailing by six, the coach told them they needed to show if they had enough character and fight to come back and win the game from behind, the gauntlet had been laid down. Dumisani Gebashe answered first, from behind the three point arc to bring the lead within reach. St Benedicts fought hard but were unable to maintain the lead with DHS going into the lead by three, with 34 seconds left to play they had possession but turned it over and allowed the opposition to score cutting the lead, they again turned the ball over and fouled a St Benedicts player in the lane who stepped up to the charity stripe to win the game, he missed both free throws and DHS had gotten out of jail, Gebashe won the rebound and held on to the ball for the remaining three seconds for DHS to come away victorious. It was a good game and it is a pit that there has to be a looser, the DHS team needs more games like this in order to improve as a great deal was learned, during the tension of the fourth quarter. A big thank you must go out to James Mthetwa the St Benedicts coach for bringing his teams down to play we always enjoy having them and look forward to a return match in JHB next year.
