Engen U/18 Tournament heats up in Pitermaritzburg

By on March 14, 2008 in High School

After the first two days of competition some suprising results have come out of the Annual Engen Interprovincial Tournament in Pietermaritzburg.

One of the disappointments at this years Engen IPT are the Gauteng girls, who did not qualify for the semifinal for the first time in 5 years.

This is the same team that has owned the womens under 18 championship for the last 4 years, with four gold medals in a row starting way back in 2003.

It seems however that lack of organisation led to the Guateng ladies downfall.

It also seems that there were quite a few key Gauteng players who did not travel to Pietermaritzburg as well.

The Gauteng girls lost to Kwazulu Natal who are the big surprise of the tournament coming out of Group A.

Kwazulu Natal ladies have made it to the semi-final where they will be played Free State in the Semi Final.

In the other ladies semi final Limpopo will took on the Western Cape.

It’s been business as usual in the boys tournament where Kwazulu Natal cruised undefeated in Group A after gliding past all the teams in group A.

They will be played the Western Cape in the Semi-final.

In the other semi-final wass Gauteng and Limpopo, who have the biggest inside presence in the tournament with 6’10” Tshilidzi Nephawe.

Aside from the on court activities Engen also held referee clinics for the officials on Tuesday before the opening ceremony and today coach Joyce Jenkins, Marvin Harvey and Lynette Woodard had a coaching clinic for all the coaches where they went through how to break the press, basic offences and team defense.

After the coaching clinic each coach received Marvin Harvey’s Engen “Get the Shot” dvd, posters, t-shirts and Joyce Jenkins gave away 5 of her books that she brought from the states.

On Friday every player received a “Get the Shot” Dvd.
