Pretoria High School for Girls wins AISJ tournament 2008

By on March 24, 2008 in High School

The 13th of March was a much anticipated date in the basketball calendar of Pretoria High School for Girls (PHSG); with them being the defending champions and going for a fourth victory in a row the girls were ready to put their stuttering preparations on the back of their mind and focus on their first games of the season. The games would be played in 2 halves of 10 minutes so the team fastest out of the blocks would prevail.

Through the leadership of their new head coach Rosemary Leak, they set about their task with a comprehensive victory over Bishop Bavin (27-19); they followed that up with another easy victory over Maritz Brothers (36-11) to finish their 1st round of games on top. In the next round they were paired up against the International School of South Africa which they dispatched without breaking a sweat (31-10) on the back of good defence. In the semi-finals they met up with their arch rivals from Pretoria, The Glen High School in a game that was always going to be a close affair due to the respect between both sets of players. The game was won in the final minutes with PHSG edging it (15-12); but both team made the crowd nervous by their play. PHSG went into the finals as favorites and they didn’t disappoint by beating Waterford by 7 points (27-20). So after taking the crown for a fourth straight year, it’s up to the other teams to try and knock PHSG off their perch at the top of the hill.
