University of Johannesburg (UJ) vs. University of Pretoria (UP, Tuks) intervarsity

March 24, 2008 in League, News

In an entertaining day filled with clashes of all the major sports, the intervarsity of 2008 was held in the back drop of the centenary celebrations at the University of Pretoria.

As far as basketball is concerned, the ladies game was a close affair with several lead changes throughout the game. UJ started with a lot of confidence on the back of a recent victory over their rival in December 2007 but Tuks led by Nicky de Villiers had been preparing for this game since the beginning of the year. All the preparations paid off in the end with the Tuks ladies eventual winners by a score of 36 – 30. The UJ ladies were shell shocked but the home team deserved it after competing and fighting for everything. And for the little amount of time she spent practicing Bulelwa Zondi had a great game.

After the ladies game, the much anticipated clash of the men’s game followed and this time UJ took the victory back to Johannesburg. The game was a close game until the half time whistle and then UJ build a lead on the back of amazing passing and accurate 3 point shooting. Tuks tried to rally and got within 5 points but in the end, UJ height was too much for the hosts and they eventually won the game by 59 – 48. The highlight of the game was an amazing dunk by a UJ player and a volleyball type of block by Tuks player Chilu Chani.

Both games were played in good spirit and provided the big crowd with a lot to cheer about. The teams will meet again for the SASSU qualifiers in April. We will keep you posted.

In 2007 after getting frustrated at the lack of information about the game he loved in South Africa, Victor decided to start Mybasketball and he hasn't looked back. For close to 15 years, Victor has experienced the game as a player, a coach, a spectator and now from a media perspective. The whole purpose of Mybasketball is to keep the fans informed about the game and anything related to it; whether it is here in SA, Africa or Overseas. Victor has made some great friends along the way and rekindled some amazing friendships through the game.. Some of those friends have joined him on this crusade to make basketball better for everyone, and he looks forward to a South Africa where basketball gets the credit it deserves and the focus is on youth development and improving the coaches.
