Pretoria High School ball news…

So apparently Willowridge are on a mission to shock the favorites this year so watch out!! Glen, Clapham and CBC are conspicuous in their silence; please tell us what’s happening on that side of town. I heard some of the u16 games in the boys division have been hot with players getting abused and posterized on their home court… (Ask CBC about the dunk in traffic by a PBHS u16 forward). There are some good players coming up in the u16 divisions even though it looks like some are coaching themselves. Rosina Sedibane’s 1st team is going about its business collecting 3 points regularly in a stealthy way, they have an up and coming forward by the name of Tshepo and word has it that he gave Thuso a thing or two to think about in LOP games, now he is doing the same in the high school league. For the girls open division, I still go for Pretoria High School for Girls and the Glen and judging from the American International School Tournament, it’s going to be a nail biting affair again. But watching some of the games over the weekend, some coaches need to be coached and need to coach their teams better. But overall basketball is still alive and well in Pretoria.

Senior basketball …

After receiving an email from a concerned basketball enthusiast, I have to mention that the Raptors ladies team are riding a wave at the moment, they started the GBL games by defeating Vaal in the 1st round and went on to defeat TUKS ladies in the 2nd round in what many thought was an “upset”. Looking at the LOP results from the 1st round; I must say that they are handling the business on that front too and currently sit in 2nd place. So well done to Raptors for bringing their game this year and watch out there will be some interesting games in the latter rounds of both GBL and LOP.

In LOP; there are 2 undefeated teams, Egoli Magic in the 1st division for men, MGI in the 2nd division for men and Wits in the ladies division. If you missed the Egoli Magic game against Wits Alumni then I suggest you catch the ESPN Extravaganza this coming Saturday 17 May at the Sandton Library parking lot (corner West and Rivonia road) where you will have a chance to see some of those players in action again. It promises to be an entertaining afternoon full of games, prize giving, clinics and celebrities.

Quick updates on the NBA… In what seem to be the theme of the playoffs this year; all series have been dominated by home court advantage so far except for the Magic-detroit series. Orlando Magic bowed out to the Detroit Pistons in game 5 (series 4-1), Detroit play the winner of the Celtics-Caveliers series. In that Celtic-Cavs series, Lebron James finally got out of his slump and put up 35 points in Boston (mostly scored in the 1st half) but that wasn’t enough against the Celtics led by Paul Pierce and Kevin Garnett who also decided to justify their superstar status. KG put up 36 points and 16 rebounds while Pierce put up 29 points and the Celtics will try and close it out in Cleveland (series 3-2). Lakers are 3-2 up on the Houston rockets on the back of some amazing Kobe play and home support (series 3-2). In the Hornet-Spurs series, it looks like a game 7 will be required to separate these two teams. Hornet took the lead again at home on the back of a monster performance from David West (38 points) with Chris Paul doing his thing as usual MVP style. Now Spurs have to win at home to force a game 7 and don’t put it beyond the defending champs with Tim Duncan, Ginobli and Parker in their roster (series 3-2).
