GBL games on Sunday 18 May 2008

There were dunks, fast breaks, crazy 3 point shooting and some old school basketball all in one day.

Coverage starts with the game between Tuks 2nd Team and Vaal University of Technology in the Men’s section. This was a game between SA players (VUT) against the part-timers; Tuks 2nd team didn’t stand a chance from the 1st whistle, with VUT going for a full court man to man and Tuks turning the ball over 70% of the time. Tuks couldn’t find a way to break down the press defence used by their opponents and when they managed to cross the half way line then there was someone waiting to contest their shots or block them. This game was totally dominated by VUT and the crowd got on its feet when a VUT player tried to dunk on a Tuks player. Despite VUT’s dominance, Tuks never gave up and there was still time for a monster block on Ayanda by Chris Kaniki before the whistle went. Final score:VUT 112-32 Tuks 2nd.

In the game between Tuks 1st team vs Vaal tech Alumni, this was a 3 point shooting exhibition and a display full of defensive mistakes from both teams. In this game Vaal Alumni looked like the part-timers against the young bucks of Tuks. Vaal recruited as they saw fit with some last minute additions to their squad the norm. They started the game with 5 players and ended with 8, including Vusi Dlamini who was just visiting from KZN. Tuks started like a house on fire on the back on some amazing 3 point shooting from Benedict Ramakau who hit 5 out of 6 shots form beyond the arc. Not to be outdone by the young guns, Flosh and Nyakalo were lighting it up from all angles for the Alumni team. Highlight of the game included a break away dunkand a block off the backboard by Chilu Chani, then on the other side there was a put back dunk by Vusi Dlamini after a missed shot and a 4 point play by Flosh after he was fouled shooting a 3 pointer. But in the end, the veterans ran out of gas and the Tuks team closed the game out.

In the women’s section, Tuks played against Vaal University of Technology. This game was close all the way to the final whistle, with Tuks playing with 5 players all the way through. Vaal tech came to the party with their new look side that is still gelling ahead of their SASSU title defence. They kept the game close by capitalising on the mistakes of the Tuks ladies and some good shooting from beyond the arc by their guards. Vaal number 4 and 11 were running the show for the visitors with some great display on the offensive end. But with Takalani Mfamadi going on a rampage early on with key interceptions and some deadly finishing which included a pump fake lay-up, Tuks were out to make amends after 2 straight losses. Supported by Bulelwa Zondi and Nicky de Villiers, Tuks relied on their fitness and experience down the stretch. But after a rally in the 3rd quarter, Vaal pulled to within 3 points of the hosts but couldn’t overtake them. Then on the back of some free throws, Tuks stabilised themselves and finished the job. Final score: Tuks 53 – 42 VUT.

In the last game of the day, University of Johannesburg pitted themselves against Bees club. In this game, UJ were favourites from the onset; but this was a much closer game than the scoreline suggest. Bees had 3 rookie players straight out of high school and the rest were veterans playing against some of the best coached girls in the league. UJ looked nervous early on and were on the back foot early on with the Bees players playing some great defence and frustrating the opposition. At half time the game was even and after a stern talking to by the UJ coach Mandla, his players came out with a new mindset and blew away their opponents. Bees got tired down the stretch and made some bad decision on the floor. Final score: UJ 69 – 44 Bees.
