UJ affects Tuks
What an afternoon for both the Tuks student teams as they came head to head on their own turf facing UJ for the SASSU qualifiers. On the ladies side UJ was determined to shut down Tuks offensive player Takalani Mfamadi when they stopped her running game; forcing Tuks to take outside shots. They managed to do that in the game when rookie, Nthabiseng Mushi, teamed up with point guard, Thato Legodi, enabling Tuks to pick up in the 3rd quarter. UJ dominated the game defensively, playing a full court man to man pressure defense on Tuks in the 4th quarter; also allowing them to capitalize on the offensive side as well as opening up gaps for players like Ellen (Phoopsy) Mothwasi and Lungile (My Champ) Motweni; to shoot 3 pointers one after the other. With Ellen’s mad ball handling skills; it was tough for the Tuks ladies to stop her and with Tuks missing a link; UJ took advantage and cleverly capitalized; ending the game off at 53-29. Was that an eye opener for Tuks? We will soon find out as the two teams will meet again at the SASSU tournament in the winter season.
On the other side of the court, the men’s team was reliving the annual intervarsity; when yet again UJ’s Thabo Letsbe dominated the floor with his spectacular basketball swagger and skill to punish Tuks. The home team held their own as they introduced a new kid on the block; fresh out of Pretoria High School for Boys; Wayne Jumat, who showed a lot of character playing against the up coming “veterans” of basketball. Benedict Ramakau gave the home crowd something to talk about when he schooled Lucky number 7 by lighting up a 3 in Mr. Leates’s face; but unfortunately that was not enough to send UJ packing as they played basic fundamental basketball, winning them a spot at the SASSU tournament where they might meet up with the Tuks team again or the SASSU Champions (Vaal University of Technology). Was this day an eye opener to show the level of competition they are to face at the SASSU tournament? Watch the space.

i believe UJ ladies team has the best line-up at SASSU level. if they don’t win the SASSU’s this year then they will never win any championship. i watched them play and very impressed and Vaal has got a lot to do to catch up. let me congradulate Mandla (UJ Coach) for building such a good team at tertiary level. again as a warning to UJ, you need to atleast practice zone defence for incase you get into foul trouble. that is one aspect i believe they lack on.
