St Albans College vs. Willowridge High School in the Open boys division

This game was crucial to both teams as the winner would top the pool and go into the playoffs unbeaten. Both teams wanted to make a statement of intent on the opposition ahead of the semis and finals this week. Willowridge have had some good results this year and were out to show that all wasn’t just hype by pitting themselves against a College team not short on confidence and with a good track record at home. Willowridge 1st team has recruited 3 players from the Bees basketball club and their contribution cannot be underestimated in the resurgence of the school in the league standings this year.

This was a strange game throughout with the inconsistency of the 3 referees the major talking point. They didn’t seem to agree on most decisions and were on several occasion making dodging calls on both sides that infuriated the crowd. Willowridge had a very good point guard who controlled the pace of the game in the 1st half and with the help of Theo Malatji who dominated the boards on both ends, the game was evenly balanced with Willowridge asking a lot of questions to their more seasoned opponents. St Albans were not focused on their game but instead the players were questioning the calls made by the referees and this just made them more frustrated. Despite the fact that the College never trailed the game by more than 3 baskets, the atmosphere was tense. When Willowridge threatened to pull away, St Albans’ Khaya Thomo and Quincy Waweru found a way to keep them in check with some important plays. Khaya was having a good game with some aggressive drives to the basket that either ended with a basket or a trip to the line for free throws while on the defensive end Quincy was doing his best by blocking shots and getting rebounds for his team. Khaya’s game ended prematurely with 5 minutes left in the game, after another one of those dodgy decisions when he was given a technical for contesting a call. This did not stop St Albans from winning the game with Quincy closing out the game with some important put backs after out jumping the defence for important rebounds. But mention must be made of the Willowridge point guard who kept his team in it until the end with some accurate passing and amazing dribbling skills… Let’s hope for the semis and finals the referees are graded and impartial because they almost spoiled a good game for both teams and the fans. It looks like it will be Willowridge vs. Rosina Sedibane and Pretoria Boys High School vs. St Albans College in the semi finals on Friday afternoon at PBHS but the schedule will be confirmed during the week.

Final score: St Albans 39 – 33 Willowridge High School.
