South Africa’s not-so-well-known link to the NBA

After Victor’s recent post about Thierry Kita’s link to the Champion Boston Celtics, I couldn’t resist including this one.

For those of you who aren’t aware of South Africa’s other influence in one of the world’s greatest professional sports, here’s a little known trivia fact about Steve Nash [currently with the Phoenix Suns], who was the Most Valuable Player in the NBA for two consecutive years [2004/05 and 2005/06 seasons], following in the footsteps of greats like Magic Johnson, Michael Jordan, and Charles Barkley.

Steve was born in Johannesburg and spent several years here while his dad played professional soccer. He later moved to Canada, and is now sadly billed as Canadian. So while it is officially a Canadian that was the NBA MVP two years in a row, we know better – he’s South African!

Darren spent many years playing basketball in Pretoria, searching out every possible way to gain extra inches on his vertical in order to disprove the theory that white men can't jump. After being distracted by the corporate world for several years, Darren returned to the game he loves to contribute in some way to its' future. Darren firmly believes we will see basketball in its rightful place as one of the top sports in South Africa, and that one of the keys to doing so is seeing information about the game made easily accessible to everyone. This is why he is now part of the MyBasketball team.

  1. Understandably so, I think if he said he was South African, that would have created other undue issues….just kidding. Anyway, this seem to be the trend. Check Thabo Sifolosha, all SA but he sees himself as Switz. Cant blame them though, what have we done for their bball skilz? So we cant claim what we didnt help create. My take!
