SASSU/USSA day 4…

By on July 4, 2008 in Other Leagues

The days have gone passed so quickly and the USSA/SASSU tournament is about to end. Teams from different provinces made it through to the semi-finals. The University of Rhodes also made it through to the semi-finals…SUPRISE, SUPRISE. To their disadvantage, they met up with “the hungry UJ” and came of short. Another shocking suprise was the second ladies semi-final, were VUT lost to UJ… Something that most people were not really expecting, considering that Vaal came through with their new recruits from Zimbabwe who played a big role in the team but that was not enough to stop the UJ guards, who killed VUT by shooting from the outside, sending Vaal packing; causing the defending champs to be playing Limpopo for third and fourth position.

finally UJ ladies managed to beat Vaal..this time i’ll hold my breath and not say who will win between Tuks and Vaal in the finals..history might repeat itself thou..last year Tuks won all their games and lost in the finals..and they beat Vaal in the 1st game who won the tournament. now they beat UJ and they meeting them in the finals. good luck Tuks.

as for the guys, i hope spectactators will be up for a great final only if UJ raise to the occasion. UJ has been known to be chokers so good luck to them.

  2. Joe says:

What happened to teams from Cape Town, I thought that since they have homegrown advantage they might bring it on. Maybe we can get an interview with Thierry on the state of bball in Cape Town.

Besides, as I got my bball shooling from CPT, I am worried that the standard is not improving.

  3. Baller says:

say that again Joe..seems like Gauteng forever dominates and doesn’t matter where they play..on the other we should also condider the fact that the 3 institutions, Vaal, UJ and Tuks scout for players from other provinces and which i think all the institutions should lern from.

am also happy for University of Limpopo Ladies fo reaching the semis without scouting or let alone having a paid coach. that shows that there are players out there and our institutions need to invest in them.

  4. Joe says:

Quite frankly as a fan, it is very worrying that I do not see anyone challeging the Gauteng teams and the fact that ballers want to leave other provinces to come to Gauteng.

I wish once players from other provinces have graduated from playing, will go back to their provinces and impart their skills there.

But then again, that is the socialist in me speaking!

  5. Baller says:

you have a point there Joe.. but the this will take us back to the debate on what are the provincial structures doing to grrom and develop players let alone administrators and coaches.

with regard to people moving back to their provinces, thats a difficult issue cos of the economic imbalances within the provinces. gauteng is the hub of business and ideally everyone would move here to further their careers.

but thn to those remaining or employed at their provinces, the challenge will be for them to keep developing basketball year in and year out.

  6. Nthabiseng says:

Enough said. TUKS LADIES ARE THE 2008 SASSU CHAMPS. More info wil follow later

  7. Joe says:

My heart is with UJ, but my mind with TUKS, which shall I choose. MMmmmm…

  8. victor says:

I am so happy for the TUKS girls and their coach… After being so close last year, they went all the way in 2008. As far as UJ, they have an amazing team and they are getting closer every year so watch out…

I have a feeling that for the men, VAAL have experience on their side but sport has a funny way of turning out suprises so you never know.

    ciao,V

  9. Nthabiseng says:

  10. Nicki says:

    Hi All

Yes TUKS came home with gold! Not an easy one allthough, but the ladies played their hearts out and I have not seen them play this well this year. Congrats girls. And then – A warm thank you for all the support – this is for those that geniunely stood by us through good and bad. We appreciate it a lot. A big thank you to all the people in Cape Town that put in a lot of time to make this tournament one that will be hard to equal. We really had a great time and the tournament was very well organized. Thanks!

  11. Nthabisena says:

Thanks for being such a great coach nicki. U rock

  12. luthando says:

its actually qyite disheartening to see how little attention was paid to the so-called little games at the SASSUs. How do we expect to grow the sport if we only focus on Gauteng vs Gauteng games. I think its high-time the underdog got some recognition.

  13. Baller says:

congrats to Tuks and Vaal..we all knew that Vaal will win the men’s championship but frankly i never thought Tuks ladies will pull through. well, thanks to the addition of Racquel at the last moment. that surely turned the tables in their favour. to all those who didn’t win the championship, please go back and start preparing for next year.

  14. victor says:

    Hi Luthando,

Sorry but I have to disagree with you on your comment, did you read SASSU/USSA day 2? I only had 2 people covering the whole tournament in Cape town and if you want you can send me any other games you feel that were not covered by us. We want to make basketball grow…

    ciao,v
