Kasi Tour – Basketball takes townships by storm during roadshow

By on September 17, 2008 in News

Hundreds of young people are being switched on to basketball, as the Kasi Basketball Tour picks up momentum during its roadshow through Gauteng’s townships to promote this exciting sport.

Already, almost 400 children, technical officials and coaches have flocked to Kagiso, Thokoza and Sharpville in recent weeks to witness the country’s top hoop-shooters in action.

The roadshow is aimed at promoting basketball as a lifestyle sport of choice, particularly among the youth, and is also refurbishing selected basketball courts in the townships.

The Kasi Basketball Tour, presented by ESPN in association with Gauteng Basketball Association (GBA) and Gauteng Department of Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation, is creating a buzz among young people about this invigorating, high-energy game that gets the adrenaline pumping.

This Saturday, 20 September 2008, the roadshow bounces into the Temba Sports Centre, before moving to Alexandra on 4 October. The action tips off at 9am every Saturday, and wraps up at 6pm.

Prospective male and female players, as well as referees, administrators and coaches, are encouraged to come to the roadshow events for a day of basketball, hip-hop sounds, giveaways and other activities. Youngsters can witness senior players from the men’s and ladies’ teams in action, conducting basketball clinics and playing exhibition games. The project also aims to inform people about the new and fresh Gauteng Basketball League starting in March of 2009.

“After soccer and road running, basketball is the third-most popular sport among black South Africans, and almost half of our local basketball players are women,” says project manager Cabby Magongwa. “It’s a great way for young people to get together in a fun, healthy and constructive environment, as the hundreds of thousands of South African basketball participants – both adults and children – will confirm.”

Entrance to the roadshow is free, so come along and sign up for a shot at the big time!
