The Pietermaritzburg Basketball League: “It’s a showdown”…

By on September 21, 2008 in News

We have seen the posters all over campus, we’ve heard about it from friends. Yes, it is on… The first ever PMB basketball league!

It will be show casing the likes of players that we have all seen and grown to love. From flair to skill, that is what this league is about. Seven teams, going head-to-head for the title of King of the court but only one can have the honour of saying that they are the indomitable champs of PMB.Many big names are to be exposed in these big rivalry games, but without a doubt we have faith in our UKZN boys (“the Beavers”), with the likes of skilful and tactical Mike Campbell and Thembani Biyam. Supporting your team is a crime. With you behind them, they’ll have the edge to go all the way.

This league commenced on Tuesday, the 12th of August, and with our UKZN-PMB men opening the league with a smashing 56-42 victory over Varsity College, the trophy is only fingertips away for the boys. Make sure you are ready for at 18h00 start on Tuesdays and a 15h00 start on Saturdays at the Varsity Outdoor courts (“Rucker Park”) at main campus. Boerewors rolls and drinks will be sold.

Don’t miss out on the action. “It’s a showdown”… The league runs from 12 August – 5 October 2008. Games take place at UKZN – PMB main court (”Rucker Park”) and the game days are Tuesdays at 18h00 and Saturdays at 15h00.

    Hey Mike,

I have been trying to confirm the results of your league and the fixtures but to no avail. So if you want regular updates on the site please feel free to forward them to us at info@mybasketball.co.za and we will put them up.

    Take care,

    ciao, V

Yo I see on the log that there are bonus points. how does a team get bonus points.

We don need to have extensive statisticians, look how the guys at Maritzburg are simplifying it.

  4. Victor says:

    Hey Neo,

That’s why I put all their information up so that hopefully some of the other leagues around the country catch on. Ciao, V

  5. mike says:

    hey neo
If a team wins by more than 20 points that gets two point, if a team wins they get 1 point, if a team looses by less than 5 points they get a point.

  6. neo says:

    Hi

So a team that wins all their matches by less than 20pts and a team that losses all their matches by less than five point will be equal on points at the end of the season.

  7. kim says:

I cracked myself reading mikes and neo’s comments on the 2 points and 1 point story but whateva makes PMB basketball grow and exciting then so be it.What I would like to find out though is how this point system came about and the reasoning behind it?!?!?!?!

  8. neo says:

Im just trying to find out, maybe we might implement it for GBL next year LOL.

  9. kim says:

Thats what I was just thinking early. We had around 7 games or more that had a 5 point differential margin.PMB might be pioneers of something BIG.Think about it though as much as we may laugh now….Who would have thought that people would be paid MILLIONS to put some stupid leather ball in a ring.Who would have thought that these 10men in a court could lose their cool and hit each other becos of this ball.Who would have thought that people would bribe each other to influence results. All because of this one damn ball.Maybe thats what SA ball need…..what you think Neo??

I admit though I neva eva thought of bonus points….If myself(when I used to play) and Neo played in that league we would have 4 point shots.I respect the idea but I still cant get used to it.

  10. neo says:

hopefully Mike can explain briefly, I know it works for Rugby but I have never heard of it in Basketball.

  11. mike says:

the bonus point system creates better competition between the teams in the league as teams are pushing themselves even harder just to gain an extra bonus point and it also forces teams to play harder defence in order to hold the their competitors within 5 points and in doing so obtain a point for there hard earned effort on the court. The bonus point system makes games more about just wining but about dominating your opponents. plus it makes the fixtures that more interesting.
