Clash of all clashes: Saint Charles vs. Maritzburg College

By on October 9, 2008 in High School

The opening game of the UKZN Pietermaritzburg basketball league saw Saint Charles take on Maritzburg College. The game lived up to all the hype that it had generated between the two rival high schools. Historically St Charles has been dominating Pietermaritzburg basketball and in the last 7 years Maritzburg College has only been able to beat St Charles twice and that was in 2005 and 2006. The odds where once again against Maritzburg College as they where out sized completely.

The two teams kept at each other with neither of the teams having a lead of more than 6 points on their rivals at any stage of the game. The lead changed between the teams various times, each team trading bucket for bucket. St Charles number 12 dominated Maritzburg College in the post dropping numerous points in the paint. Maritzburg College had an advantage over St Charles as there guards where faster and more of an offensive treat than St Charles guards. Both teams where shooting well from the perimeter with St Charles Shooting Guards connecting more 3’s in the game.

Maritzburg College took the lead in the last minute to secure the win. The final score was 38-37 to Maritzburg College. This being the third time that Marizburg College has beaten St Charles in the last 7 years and an excellent way to start of their season.

Lets just hope both teams were playing good defence and not bad offence, 38-37.
