Playoff weekend

By on October 3, 2008 in League

Basketball season is almost over for most leagues and LOP is no exception, hence the past weekend being playoffs and semi-finals. After the Raptors Ladies’ Team lost to (Phumla) and MGI, things didn’t look too good for the Soweto teams. The Raptors Men’s Team came head to head with Scorpions to what was quite an ego booster for Scorpions (having had a dismal season) and winning against Raptors was exactly what they needed to get their spirits up again. The game got off to a very slow start as both these teams were trying to find their momentum and the referees were not helping in this regard, Scorpions had ball position for most of the first period; Zeph was the man putting up the numbers for Scorpions.

Second half was looking better for Raptors (for about two minutes) …Scorpions kept their momentum right through till the end, “I’m tired of people saying we are not a real team! Egoli hasn’t beaten a team by this margin this whole season!” said Merlin. Scorpions went home happy, beating Raptors 116-56.

One could sense the tension and nerves from the stands when Egoli and Pretoria Heat took the court. Egoli played smooth defense throughout the game making offense effortless for them. Lesego Molebatsi and Neo Mothiba started their own three point contest in the second half; that’s after Neo had a shocking first half; and getting dunked on by Lesego sure helped him bring up his game. Egoli blew out the fire from Heat with a final score of 110-79.

The Wits Alumni and Wits Rebels game had the crowd going crazy. The Rebels ended up running out of options when Tshiamo fouled out due to his aggressiveness on court. Djo Lo must have had about 6 dunks before fouling out in the fourth period, leaving Alumni playing with four men. Thabo Letsebe is one phenomenal player, who defines basketball swagger. Thabo aka Spiderman was ‘man of the match’ hands down and the spectators who were watching this game can testify to this. Crossing over 3 players by yourself, not once but on a couple of occasions makes you man of the match on any day. Alumni ended up playing with 3 players on court with Denash and Mfundo out along side Djo. This did not stop Thabo, Mbosh and Quinton from winning the game for Alumni. After an entertaining game, the final score was 102-78.
