PSBA hosts a basketball Clinic in Mamelodi

It was a cold Saturday morning the team met at 07:00 at St Mary’s DSG to plan for the unknown, nahh this is not a fiction novel but a story about determination.Pretoria Schools Basketball Association (PSBA) held another inspiring basketball clinic this time in Mamelodi, a huge township in the City of Tshwane. Mamelodi has for a while been the sleeping giant of Tshwane Basketball. This township has been running the annual Easter tournament for the past 13 odd years; the participating numbers has dwindled due to various reasons. Since most Provinces only cater for high school and senior competitions, no one really looks at the reason for the downfall of many sports in South Africa which is the lack of clinics at grass roots level. The transfer of knowledge from generation to generation can only occur if experienced players and coaches go out in their community and hold clinics.
On the day we had kids walking 10km to come and enjoy the day with us. Mother Nature was trying by all means to see if we really committed to this project by throwing some dust, wind and bitterly cold weather at us. Despite all these challenges, Mother Nature couldn’t top the smiles of those kids who were there to enjoy the action. On the day we had about 120 kids from U9 till U14. It was very encouraging to see some of the local teachers showing interest in the sport and actually being active.
The coaches had fun, the kids had fun and the fundamentals were shared all the way round. This is the beginning as we are about to involve other areas of Tshwane and the hard to reach town. One of my mentors who happen to be a basketball player, Al Feinstein, once told me that if you want to produce a world class product you must make sure that you take care of the basics. And hopefully these clinics are the beginning of a long term relationship between the Pretoria Schools Basketball Association and its most important assets, its people.
