Strategic plan of Basketball South Africa

By on November 9, 2008 in News

The strategic goals for basketball are based on a set of high level principles. These principles define a core philosophy that helps ensure decisions on the planning, implementation, and are made consistent with a common strategic direction. They should provide the basis for all levels of decisions within the federation, from the planning of major projects to the implementation of small project tasks. The strategic goals are not drafted to be specifically applicable to any one component of this plan.

The strategic goals for the federation are:

  • Federation organization structure. This is mainly focused on the function ability of the federation with regards to administration, finance, legal and other requirements.

The “Why” [described above] is great. The “How” will be even more interesting to hear! Looking forward to it.

  2. Joe says:

How does this differ from the infamous Vision 2008?

  3. Victor says:

    Hey there,

Just updated the post with more information.

    ciao,V

  4. Setlogelo says:

I still have a copy of the vision 2008.

Let me say, the strategic plan has something special about it. It is realistic and engage in a holistic business approach.

I realise that they have taken the envisaged Four Nation Tournament which was part of the PBL Programme. Good shot.

The strategic plan also shines because it is focused on the stakeholders. Let me say the people who drew the plan have a clear direction of the journey for basketball in the country.

Again this plan is realistic. They just need to work on Provincial structures where marketing people will become brand ambassadors. Of course the marketing person will have to champion this course.

The federation is on the right course.

  5. Joe says:

    Hmmm……… Sounds good!

  6. kim says:

Sounding and implementation is 2 different things but for the sake of basketball I hope it is realised.

  7. Lorenz says:

    Ho Ho Ho!

Another BSA saga.I hate to say but this is a copy and paste. For us who’ve been there we are very corncern however, let us see what is next.

To be honest,I expected the strategic plan to be more aggressive.I liked Molupe’s article but Im afraid people like him will only suggest thus far.Guys Im not trying to be nagative about way forward,it’s just that I have been here before.

  8. kim says:

    Lorenz
Seemingly bball people have been far ahead of us techno minded people and seeing that the season I think we are learning these things.I just want to findout a couple of things though.

1)You say this is copy and paste….Where from?Is it from the previous executive strategic plan/vision or european document?
2)Did the previous regime have one?
3)What do you mean by aggressive strategic plan?

  9. Joe says:

    Lorenz

I echo your sentiments, this sounds very much like Vision 2008, at least in spirit. But hey, new President, new National Administrator, lets hope that they have learnt from their previous mistakes.

  10. Setlogelo says:

My point is based on some observations I made, reading through this strategic plan whilst noting the Vision 2008. We must never undermine the brains of a person because we do not know what they can do when implementing their thoughts. A friend of mine, Casalis “Papa” Marabe taught me this.

Since Lorenz was there previously, let us turn our attention to the failures of Vision 2008 strategic document.

On my first comment, I mentioned a few elements.

    1. Vision 2008

  11. kim says:

A politicians life is difficult and I am struggling to keep up with you guys. Can we please get this Vision 2008 guys.Please.

The transition from looking at X and O to strategic documents is tiresome but we need to be informed so that as coaches we know what is the final destination supposed to be like.

Someone please email me Vision 2008 if Vic doesnt have it.

  12. Setlogelo says:

I do not know what happened with my comment. It got lost somewhere.

    To continue with the failures:

    1. Vision 2008 was not realistic

When we set goals, we have to be realistic. The resources were not accumulated when the document was written. This failure was prevalent where National team players were not remunerated. A daily allowance is just like that, daily allowance. One coach Flosh was recorded as claiming his back pay from the Federation. Never set goals when you do not have the resources.

    2. Vision 2008 was not sustainable.

The vision was blurred. It was based on boardroom decisions. There were apparent discussions to have FIBA admit two countries to represent Africa in World Championships and Beijing. As this was the premise, the federation ignored to work on programmes. The programmes determine performance. You can never have a single programme such as the Engen IPT’s and look forward to representing Africa in the world stage. By the way, to convince the world body, the federation needs to build reputation. They must earn a respect of their peers.

    3. Vision 2008 was not focused.

Again the premise was the need to see the senior men national team competing at the Beijing Olympics. It is fine to narrow your focus but the stakeholders were neglected. Moreover the customers were not consulted properly. Stakeholders and customers are different. But I will not go into the theory.

Although Vision 2008 and the above strategic document are familiar, the approach is different. It is in the wording which makes the latter more realistic. Again, Vision 2008 was based on what the federation did not have, it was a pie in the sky. In fact it was a document which was luring the sponsors.

The present document is good. However I disagree with competing against the other sporting codes for preference. I will prove that in my research about sponsorships.

    Victor

Must I fax you the Vision 2008 so that the public can compare? I need your fax number. You have my e-mail.

  13. Joe says:

I am interested in whether the Strategic Plan is based on research, especially consulting relevant stakeholders ie coaches, players, technical officials, administrators? If so how was this achieved and when?

If this was not done, minus another point for adminstrative excellence.

  14. kim says:

    Joe
At the rate that you are going Joe,BSA will have -100 points in Administration excellence cos seemingly they have -1000points in political excellence(hahahaha)…….

Once bitten, twice shy seems to be the motto.I am optimistic that basketball will return to its glory days.Mistakes will be done, controversies will arise but I believe basketball heads wont silently watch their sport go down the gutter AGAIN.I think we as ballers are critical during this stage. We mustnt leave it to the politicians only to try ensure things go right but we must also have our input as well.If we do that I think it doesnt matter who is incharge, leaders are bound to listen to us.

I dont think the leadership that is in place will abandon us but they must learn from their(BSA) previous mistakes and ensure that we build a solid structure and most importantly create an environment where basketball can grow.

  15. Setlogelo says:

No research was done on this Joe. Flip the Vision 2008 and you get the Strategic Plan.

Someone does have a great idea. But their vision is not far fetched. However they are making it realistic this time around.

Perhaps they used the consultants. Then I call for a technical foul against their poor performance.

  16. Setlogelo says:

    I agree with you Kim

The failures of Vision 2008 made them flip it into the present strategy. They will definitely succeed. If it does not work one way, try the other.

  17. Joe says:

    Kim

Do not worry for every good deed I will add on point, hopefully in the final analysis the score will be positive, blame my scoring on my perfomance based management approach.

The biggest mistake that most politicians make is to think that they know best and therefore fail to consult with stakeholders. Sometimes one may implement a very good programme, howeve if that programme is not relevant to the audience then one has failed. From where we are coming from it would have been wise for BSA to engage in an extensive consultative process which was going to guide their plans.

This style management has been proven to work not only in being effective but in making the stakeholders feel that they are valuable and therefore take ownership of plan and programmes. The approach that has been adopted is a top down one which research has shown that it is not wise in a volatile environment, where there is a lot healing that needs to be achieved.

As much as I personally do not trust Tsepo, I however trust him to be Tsepo that is a Hustler of note, eg VAAL. I am confident that he should be able to convince even the most stubborn of sponsors to buy into basketball.

  18. Setlogelo says:

I yooh, do not raise any expectations regarding sponsorships. It is big a task. Basketball will be a charity case for at least a year. Of course a charity case of the government. They must put resources to support basketball, like any other sporting code.

First the Lotto gave them money for the Seniors. Provincial sports departments will also help with the necessities. The next tournament has assistance from Sports and Recreation. It is a government agency.

At the moment basketball cannot prove its mettle. A lot of bad things have happened. The world economic crisis does not help either.

I for one am counting on Cabby Magongwa to stage the successful league in Gauteng next year. That product will attract sponsorship into the game. BSA must support the initiative. It will turn into a national Campus Basketball League. Then in mid 2010, something will come up because the focus of the marketers will change.
( I hope what Mr. Maleka reportedly said about the review will not impact negatively on the league). We had Metro League, but this is something special.

As for Tshepo and what has been said, I doubt he will make impress immediately. He has been in the thick of things. He will need to associate very strongly with people of business acumen.

The sport needs a massive makeover. The media will help to a certain extent by projecting something positive. But the scribes are human being living around us. If stories support the lack of cohesion in the game, then we need to forget it for a while.

  19. Theo Chauke says:

I want to call all the people of limpopo who have great concern with the basketball to come froward.Time for talking is over,it is the time that we act in this issues.

All the guys who have interest in discuss allthe situation. We can set the venue and dates for discuss.

All the people who have interests,my email is theochauke@gmail.com

  20. Victor says:

    Hey Setlogelo,

On Vision 2008, I would prefer it emailed in a word document so that I can publish it if need be. But I will email you to find out if there is a way around this because I assume you only have a hard copy?? But I would like to know what everyone is talking about and I am sure that I am not the only one.

    ciao,V

  21. kim says:

Cant wait to see this so called ‘Original’ of the ‘Copy and Paste’ document.

  22. Setlogelo says:

Well, I have sent a Road Map to Vision 2008 to Victor.

  23. nthabiseng says:

Guys lets just give the new committe a chance implement these strategies. Lets not get negative and personal.

  24. Joe says:

    Nthabiseng

Please explain, I have gone through the comments and cannot find any negative or ‘personal’ comment.

  25. Theo Chauke says:

Kim,If I may ask,so there is no sponsor in the Inter-provincial tournament that will support the province to go to PE.The reason i am asking is that,is to inform that candidates that will be called for Limpopo Team, because some of the guys a my teammates,

Issues on trial or Preparation,Do you prepare old names or you let people come for trial to select a best team

Limpopo is full of old names players who are not involved in basketball,if you have that situation,to need to trials to prepare for a good team,They must stop this thing of relying on one player,It kills a player when you play him,the whole 40 min, especially if you have so called Old names players
