South Africa's basketball community

What if you were BSA president?

By on January 15, 2009 in News

While reading some of the 2009 comments, I came across a question on one of the posts from Neo Mothiba, the current SA basketball captain wondering what would some of you do if they gave you a chance to lead the basketball fraternity in SA out of the mess it currently finds itself in. We have had plenty of mud slinging towards the federation in the last few years but what is the solution to some of the problems that we find ourselves in?

Please pick a topic and discuss it:

  • 1. What would be your 4 year plan?
  • 2. How would you improve the popularity of the sport again?
  • 3. How would you develop the game at grass roots?
  • 4. How would you improve the standing of BSA in the sporting community?
  • 5. How do you make them accountable and credible in the eyes on the basketball community?
  • 6. How do you add value to the National teams at all age groups?
  • 7. How do we improve the technical side of the game (coaches, referees, etc..)

These are some of the topics I could think of but if you have any others you want to discuss please feel free…

I also think we should stick to the discussion under the previous topic. Those elements have emerged from what has already being discuseed.

I think one of the most important things that the BSA President would have to do is to improve the popularity of the sport again. By doing that it would make other tasks easier to accomplish. With more popularity there would be more participation leading to more competition which in turn leads to level of the game increasing. Many youngsters are choosing other sports at schools not because they do not enjoy basketball but because the other sports have greater participation and it becomes that much more worthwhile for them.
With Basketball its not not a matter of getting new people on board but sipmly reminding people why it is that love the sport. It starts with simple things such as marketing campaigns with all out tactics to make make people see the era of basketball and forget the past. Hearing about the changes from a couple of people can only go so far, but National marketing campaigns will go a long way.
We all know how most of us ballers like good images, it’s about time our structures do the shame.
