The Kearsney first basketball team started slowly in the fist quarter not being able to convert on a number of shots, while the Hilton team managed to score fairly easily. The Kearsney team trailed 3 – 7 at the end of the first quarter. A change in defence saw the game swing back in the Kearsney teams favour and the managed to draw the quarter 9- 9 with some good defensive pressure. The game was poised for an exciting second half with Kearsney only trailing by four points. The Kearsney players knowing that they are not a great offensive team stepped up the pressure on defence in the third quarter and finished only one point behind (21 – 22), their much stronger opponents.

The fourth quarter was a tense and hard fought affair with the scores being ties with 55 seconds left on the clock and Kearsney in possession of the ball; they turned it over and allowed Hilton to attack. Strong defence saw Hilton turn over the ball and allowed Kearsney to have possession with 43 seconds remaining. The Kearsney team who had moment earlier been chastised by there coach for turning the ball over remained patient, making good passes and cuts retained possession and with 0.8 seconds remaining on the clock Ngcebo Shange took a three point shot which hit the rim and bounced out. He was fouled in the process and awarded three free shots; he missed the first but made the second thus ensuring the win for Kearsney and becoming the hero of the hour. Top scores for Hilton were A. Gwamanda with 5 and B. Loudon with 7. Kearsney’s top scorers were Mark Astrup with 10 points and Ngcebo Shange 5. The worrying factors in Kearsneys game was the number of turnovers 23 for the game it will be an aspect they will need to work on as well as their free throw shooting as they only made 8 of 19 free throws. Next Saturday see they lock horns with Clifton College in the morning and perennial powerhouse DHS in the afternoon.
