The clash of the two independent schools on Saturday was the first game contested by them for many years and would to be an entertaing match for all the spectators. Michaelhouse ranked unofficially at no. two in the province below DHS (unofficially as the two schools do not play basketball against each other) but both have kept up a very good record over the last number of years.

Looking out over the court you may have been forgiven in thinking that boys were playing men, the Michaelhouse team was much larger than the home team but were soon to find out that while size is a factor it’s not as important as how much fight a team has. The first quarter saw MHS pull away and jumped to a 06 – 13 lead. Kearsney closed the gap to four points in the second quarter to go into the half only three points behind (17 – 20) and suddenly believing that they could slay the giant.

Unfortunately Kearsney let things slip in the third quarter and allowed Michaelhouse to pull away, once again big man Bradley Vincent was fouled out in the third quarter placing the team under pressure.  The MHS players went about their business in a clean and methodical fashion, making good passes and making their free throws, while the Kearsney players showed their inexperience and committed too many fouls allowing MHS to shoo free throws. The third quarter ended with MHS seven points up (23 – 30).

The fourth quarter saw Kearsney show much more aggression of offence and attack the zone that MHS were playing and were able to draw fouls and shoot free throws, the game may have been different if they had made more of them but it did put them under pressure to find points elsewhere. The call was answered by Captain Sandelie Khumalo who hit a huge three pointer and made two free throws to give Kearsney a chance in the dyeing minutes of the game. However the number of carless fouls that they had committed counted against them and they had three players fouled out. MHS responded by making their free throws putting the game beyond doubt, they emerged worthy victors 39 – 42. Tope scores were A. Laing 18, D. Norman 8 for MHS and F. Qoboshiyane 12, I Sprague 8 and S. Khumalo 6.

Good to hear of the good work you are doing at KC. KZN schools basketball seems to be thriving.

I am aware of many of the coaches of the teams in the league. Please add the 1st team coaches names to your fixture. Are you also able to update the fixtures showing the scores?

Once again keep up the good work.
