RBL: St Albans College vs. Pretoria Boys High School – 31/02/2009

By on February 3, 2009 in High School

Derby matches are usually fiercely contested encounters with both sides battling for the pride of their teams, but this was not the case when St Alban’s simply capitulated against their visitors Pretoria Boys High School in a Johannesburg Basketball league match at the weekend.

Boys’ High, who had lost to St Benedict’s in their opening game of the season, easily routed their hosts 32-16 in this one sided encounter.

Both teams had retained the core of their squads that did duty for them last year in the basketball season and what should have been a revenge match for St Alban’s (Boys’ High won this fixture at home 38-25 last year) only  proved to be more of a walkover for the visitors.

From the tip-off Boys’ High, grabbed the initiative by taking a 6-0 lead in the opening minutes of the first quarter with team captain Brian Tsabadi helping himself to four points in the proceedings.

By the end of the opening quarter the visitors lead 8-2, with Lebogang Ramokgopa and Lefatshe Shakung of Boys’ High adding to Tsabadi’s four points, while Wesley Dinham scored the hosts solitary two points.

The second quarter saw the home side try to make a game of it, but Boys’ High were just too strong and they pulled away in the game, a basket each from Tsabadi and Fhumi Maboho and four points from Bulelani Ntsaluba made it 16-9 for the visitors while Khuliso Ramashia scored four points and point guard Rhys Carolissen scored a single basket for St Alban’s.

If St Albans thought they could make a comeback, those hopes were quickly evaporated with a master class display from the PBHS guards, especially (PBHS 5 – Bulelani) who took the game over with good defence and a wide range of shots that had the crowd buzzing. He had 3 pointers, reverse lay-ups, left handed layups, midrange shots; everything seemed to go in.  Victor Fouda, St Albans coach, looked desperate and without answers for his team’s inability to score baskets. Their point guard was making the wrong decision and turnovers in the game, while (St Albans 14 – Wesley Dinham) looked like a player without any confidence in his shot.

This quarter, was scripted the same as the last as, Boys’ High continued their dominance over their hosts. Maboho and Ntsaluba scored a basket each, while Leslie Nteta delivered a three pointer for the visitors to build a 10 point unassailable lead with the final scores at 23-13 at the end of that quarter.

Boys’ High were in no mood to relax in the fourth and final quarter, Ntsaluba started the proceedings with a three pointer for his 11 points of the game and Shakung scored four points for the visitors.

St Alban’s final points were scored by Chan-hee Lee and Bame Nkate as the home side fell to a 16 point defeat against their rivals.

This was probably the worst performance by a St Albans 1st team in a long while. They were totally outclassed in every department and despite the numerous turnovers made by both teams, they never had a chance. With the game already won, Wesley Diepering and Thibe Rantloane, PBHS coaches decided to give their bench some experience with extended minutes on the floor. Despite this, the home crowd was subdued while the visitors were singing all the way home. Final score: St Albans 16 – 32 PBHS
