2009 season tips off in Gauteng with the GBL
The newly formed Gauteng Basketball League (GBL) is getting 2009 off to a flying start, with a jam-packed calendar of fixtures starting on 8 March.
This inaugural season promises thrills and action galore, with several clubs signing up to thrash it out for supremacy on the courts. Men’s and women’s teams will be playing their games at Wits University, the University of Pretoria, the Grace Bible Church and the Vaal.
Fixtures are scheduled for Thursdays to Sundays between March and May, with a month-long winter break in June before the competition ramps up again between July and October.
Last year, the Gauteng Basketball Association and Pro Sport Consulting agreed to form a combined senior league to enhance the competitiveness of the sport in the province. Supported by the Gauteng Department of Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation, the GBL is setting its sights on being the top league in the country.

Bust some moves and win big with Channel O’s Urban Dance competition!
Channel O is giving all aspirant dancers in Gauteng a chance to make a big impression and win with this year’s Urban Dance competition.
The competition launches on Sunday 8 March on the same day as the Gauteng Basketball League – and all the Urban Dance competition events will take place in tandem with the newly launched League’s games. The venue for both launches is the Wits University Hall 29 on the West Campus and the action begins at 9:00am when the Division 1 and 2 games are played.
At 13:00 it’s the turn of the Channel O Urban Dance Competition to take centre stage with VJs Nonhle and Proverb MCing as well as Channel O’s own DJ Waxxy on the decks. It’s back to basketball again after that with the Premier Ladies and Premier Mens games. “Basketball and urban dance are a natural fit. Both are based on the streets and can be played anywhere giving talented people a shot at making it. We’re very excited to be partnering with the new Gauteng Basketball League in bringing this dance contest to life,” says Channel Director Yolisa Phahle.
The Channel O Urban Dance Competition runs for eight months. From March to October a contest will take place on the last basketball event day of the month at venues selected by the Gauteng Basketball League, covering the whole of Gauteng. Additionally there will be special competition days at key basketball events including the Gauteng Basketball League finals, the ESPN Celebrity Basketball Extravaganza and Slam Da Trash in Newtown. At the end of the season, the total average score of the groups will be calculated and the average score will determine the top four groups that will compete in the semi-finals and finals of the dance competition.
Urban dance groups of five members and up, irrespective of age and gender, are encouraged to enter. The winning group takes home R20 000 in prizes and the top performing groups will be booked by production partners, DarkChild Productions for events and corporate performances. The dance crews who make it will also be profiled on Channel O and be given the chance to increase their visibility to the broader public.
