St Albans’ senior basketball team had easy outing at home against Sacred Heart in their final match of the season in the Rainbow Basketball League (RBL) at the weekend.

The Tshwane city school trounced the Sacred Heart 71-37 to record their fourth win of the season. In a changed format of the game, where two halves were played instead the usual four quarters, the hosts got off to a nervy start when the visitors took an early 3-2 lead. It seemed as if the hosts had underestimated their opponents. Seeing his team’s slack approach to the game St Alban’s coach Victor Fouda called for an early time out and to give his players a stern lecture. The coach’s words had a positive effect on the players as the hosts got their act together on the court and showed their superiority over their far weaker Johannesburg opponents.

St Alban’s shooting guard Anthony Dinham proved again to be the host’s most potent attacking weapon racking up seven points, while point guard Rhys Carolissen and Bame Nkate both came off the bench to four points each for a 35-18 lead in the first half.

In the second half with victory safely assured for the hosts the St Alban’s coach looked to his bench to consolidate their 17-point lead and they did not disappoint with Nkanyiso Tswete being the most effective player scoring six points. But it was shooting guard Dinham who led the home side in scoring with a total of nine points to end as his team’s top scorer with 17 points.

Meanwhile Pretoria Boys’ High School’s first team participated in the St John’s Tournament at the weekend which featured the host school St John’s, St Benedict’s, Crawford and Bishops from Cape Town. Boys’ High started the tournament well beating St Benedict’s in their opening game 54-32, the city school followed up their opening victory with two more victories against Crawford (56-41) and Bishops (46-32). Boys’ High unfortunately lost to St John’s 26-23 in a hard fought final.
