In 1994: R21.5 Million – Basketball looks set to take South Africa by storm

April 28, 2009 in News

A glittering launch of Basketball South Africa was held in Johannesburg on Wednesday, 29 June ’94. A new, improved, unified Basketball South Africa (BSA), complete with International affiliation and Professional league, unveiled its plans, strategies and recently signed sponsors.

No less than twelve confirmed sponsors all committed to a minimum of three years involvement in the sport, with a collective cash value of R21.5 million, basketball looks set to take South Africa by storm.

Mr. Dan Moyo, Chairman of BSA said, “It is a truly great moment for basketball. Many people have put a tremendous amount of effort into ‘getting it together’ and now that we have, the possibilities are endless.”South Africa has already been awarded the Africa Women’s Basketball Championships, which takes place in Johannesburg in December.

“We believe that basketball is a truly ‘new-South African sport. It caters for the young and old, black or white, male and female. All you need is a hoop and the ball – the rest is up to you,” Moyo added.

According to Sandy Papale, Managing Director of Sandys (Pty) Ltd, appointed agents for BSA, basketball’s potential in South Africa is vast. “Basketball has exploded onto the International scene in the last two years and already is rated in the top eight major countries. With its financial muscle and dedicated organisers, basketball has all the ingredients to become the sport of the new South Africa.

With approximately four-and-a-half- million players registered in South Africa, there is no doubt that the sport is growing at a phenomenal rate.

“Basketball is an extremely ‘marketable’ sport. It is cost-effective for the sponsor, while offering high visibility and maximum return on investment,” said Felicity Miller, Marketing Director of BSA.

From a Developmental point of view, the sport is a goldmine. Again, with very little output, structured development programmes and new facilities are being set up. David Mamabolo has been appointed National Development Officer for BSA an plans are underway to start training Regional Development Officers to follow up on Mamabolo’s National Training Programme.

In 2007 after getting frustrated at the lack of information about the game he loved in South Africa, Victor decided to start Mybasketball and he hasn't looked back. For close to 15 years, Victor has experienced the game as a player, a coach, a spectator and now from a media perspective. The whole purpose of Mybasketball is to keep the fans informed about the game and anything related to it; whether it is here in SA, Africa or Overseas. Victor has made some great friends along the way and rekindled some amazing friendships through the game.. Some of those friends have joined him on this crusade to make basketball better for everyone, and he looks forward to a South Africa where basketball gets the credit it deserves and the focus is on youth development and improving the coaches.
