Wheelchair Basketball News…

Here are some extracts from the Newsletter that I received regarding Wheelchair basketball

It was the Confederation Cup final and USA; the underdogs so nearly caused an upset of the century as Brazil calmly took the game away from them (thank you to VISA for the invitation to an amazing game of football). Bafana Bafana restored pride in their showing against Spain and the mighty British & Irish Lions roar was some what muffled as the Sasol Springbok’s grit and die hard determination kicked their way to victory to take the tour 2 – 1in an epic battle of supremacy and last but not least, IWBF Africa saw its first Wheelchair Basketball Womens team return home victorious to South Africa with a Bronze medal from the America’s Cup and the SA U23 National team embarks upon a daunting campaign to bring a world ranking back to Africa.

Last weekend saw the struggling former champions, the Visa Wings fall out of the Top 4 as they lost both their games against the Eagles and the Pumas but the upset was Eagles triumph over the Blades and repeated it as they beat the Gestetner Pumas although the Pumas forge their dominance as log leaders And finally, our U23 National Team finishes off their final preparation for the IWBF Junior World Cup this week as they jetted off to Paris to play for a place in history only to have the Airports company forget their Wheelchairs in SA!

National Womens Team

The South African Womens Wheelchair Basketball Team returns with Bronze after a tough clash with Argentina beating them 38 – 35 on the final day of competition coming home with 4 wins and two losses. The team management reported that the tour was a success and the girls performed well beyond expectations taking in consideration with the limited time in preparation but overall the success was that Africa competed in the America’s Cup and in the overall picture placed 5th behind USA, Canada, (who had qualified by previous IWBF world rankings), and Mexico & Brazil.

SA vs Mexico 13 – 54

SA vs Guatemala 50 – 24

SA vs El Salvador 45 – 17

SA vs Nicaragua 55 – 0

SA vs Brazil 55 – 70

SA vs Argentina 38 – 35

On behalf of IWBF Africa & Wheelchair Basketball SA, congratulations on your achievement, we can only grow from strength to strength now that our girls have seen what they are up against.

National U23 Team

The U23 National Wheelchair Basketball Team qualified in October 2008 by beating Nigeria to book a place to the IWBF Junior World Cup in Paris from the 5 July to 16 July 2009 to represent the Africa Zone. They open their campaign against unknown Malaysia and then meet tough opposition against Brazil, USA and Australia. European runner ups, Spain will also be a tough contender but coach Mulder is looking for two wins in his group to play off either against Mexico, Japan or Sweden which will give him a Top 8 finish. Here’s wishing you all the best from WBSA and the country and make the Ama-wheeler boys proud!”

And my favourite part of the news letter… The referees’ evaluation before the playoff stages….
