Saturday saw the opening encounters of the 2009/2010 school basketball season. The Kearsney basketball teams travelled to sleepy hollow for the encounter in their first tester as a team, since the matic’s from the first term would not be playing. It is always difficult to play at St Charles but for once the hostile crowd did not materialise which made things easier but did not lessen the nerves of the two young teams.Kearsney sprang into action and took an early 7 point lead, but missing a number of easy opportunities to consolidate the lead. The Kearsney captain Mark Astrup picked up two quick fouls and sent most of the first half on the bench, forcing an inexperienced backcourt to step up and carry the team without his leadership on the court. Saints clawed their way back and found themselves down 9 – 5 at the end of the first quarter.

Baskets were traded and some careless fouling by the Kearsney defence saw Saints go to the free throw line far too often and convert some of the shots from the charity stripe. Kearsney turned the ball over too may times during the quarter to maintain their lead and half time saw the teams on a level pegging 16 points each.

With young big man Ian Sprague fouled out and the bench looking lean Kearsney lost their way in the third quarter and saints guard Uli Fisher made some good shots from the top of the key to ensure his team got the lead and kept it for the rest of the quarter. The third quarter ended with Kearsney down by four points.

Kearsney worked had to bring the game close but again Uli Fisher kept them at bay with some good shooting, scoring six points in the quarter. With tree minutes to go Kearsney closed the gap to four points but then again the spectre of turnovers came back to haunt them, they committed forty four turnovers during the game, and they could not finish under the basket. Saints ended up wining 43 – 34.
