By on April 10, 2010 in News
Basketball SA cancelled the upcoming U18 inter-provincial tournament (IPT) as too few provinces heeded the call to confirm their attendance at the tournament.

In a notice dated 18 March, 2010, the Basketball SA Manco informed provinces that the upcoming U18 IPT that was too be held in Tlokwe fro 28 March to 1 April, was cancelled “due to non-confirmation of participation by provincial members.”

Basketball SA further thanked North West for preparations that were made by the host province, as well as thanked Limpopo, Gauteng and Mpumalanga for heeding the numerous calls to confirm their participation in the IPT.

The Gauteng Basketball Association (GBA) will continue with the U18 Team GBA programme within the province, in developing the future elite basketball players for the province. GBA is also in communication with the National Federation on the way forward regarding national team selection for 18 and under basketball players in 2010.

GBA have further secured an exciting exhibition game for the Team GBA U18 boy’s squad over the upcoming Easter weekend with a visiting team from the United States of America, the 1dreamfoundation, details of which will be communicated in the next week.

We continue to encourage the Gauteng Basketball community in its efforts to keep the ball bouncing and urge you to let us know about your events so that we can support you where possible.

We are also now on Twitter so look us up via email – baskteballgp@gmail.com and let’s keep the lines of communication open.

The Gauteng Basketball Association is the official provincial affiliate for Gauteng in the General Assembly of Basketball South Africa, a member of the South African Sports Confederation Olympic Committee (SASCOC).

It will be interesting to find out WHY provinces could not confirm their attendance of such an important and historic event? More interesting is what BSA could have done to assist provinces? Even more interesting is this the death knell to junior bball in SA since the USSA U17 were cancelled as well?

  3. Guru says:

I cannot understand the reasoning behind the cancellation. All you need are two provinces to confirm and the games go on. What BSA has done is allowed the non-performing,unorganised provinces to hold the rest at ransom. Why cancel the games? let the othe provinces know that they need to sorth themselves out. All those juniors practising and for what? No provincial recognition, no National representation?

  4. Jayo69 says:

I am really disappointed with this news. Someone in BSA should be held accountable for this mess. Accountability and responsibility are two of the greatest things our leadership in basketball lack. This is how we destroy our future and then we wonder why we always end up last.

  5. TWEE says:

BSA is lying. The only reason why they cancelled is because they have no money to organise this IPT. Ive heard that BSA is in 2 million rand debt. lol. Now they want to put the blame on the provinces. Shame for junior basketball in RSA. 2009 the IPT were cancelled, 2010 again. wtf
