It was not the best of weather to play a game of basketball, when St Mary’s Diocesan School for Girls senior team hosted their cross-town rivals Pretoria High School for Girls counterparts on a rainy Friday afternoon in the Pretoria Schools League. Both teams braved the wet conditions, but it was last year’s league champions Girls High, who conjured up a 21-15 victory for their second win of the season over their arch rivals, despite the poor weather on the day.

DSG took control of the game in the first quarter, using their set plays well with Joyce Katol Kalule, Ntsako Risivo and Candice Foot contributing two each for the hosts to lead the game 6-4 lead at the end of the quarter.

The second quarter was a low scoring affair as both teams scored three points between them and weather also beginning to impact on the playing conditions, but DSG were still in the lead (8-5) with Sannie Grobelaar scoring two points, while for Girl’s High Nicole Mangondo scored one point from the free throw line.

After trailing in the first two quarters, Girls High showed they are the stuff champions made of, when they fought their way back into the game, while the DSG  lost the plot which had given them a good start in the encounter.

As the rain pelted down, the visitors seemed to cope better with the wet weather conditions, as they rallied back into the game scoring 10 points. Nkageng Mokgatle contributed six points, while Thuli Keupilwe and Adelaide Mosala added two points each to take a 15-10 lead going into the final quarter, while DSG were restricted to scoring only two points courtesy of Lesego Mokoana.

Girls High pushed for a strong finish in the fourth stanza with Mosala, Gali Ndlovu and Keupilwe scoring two points to seal the 21-15 win for the visitors. While for the hosts Risivo and Kalule scored two points, while Busisiwe Khanyile scored a point from the free throw line.

In 2007 after getting frustrated at the lack of information about the game he loved in South Africa, Victor decided to start Mybasketball and he hasn't looked back. For close to 15 years, Victor has experienced the game as a player, a coach, a spectator and now from a media perspective. The whole purpose of Mybasketball is to keep the fans informed about the game and anything related to it; whether it is here in SA, Africa or Overseas. Victor has made some great friends along the way and rekindled some amazing friendships through the game.. Some of those friends have joined him on this crusade to make basketball better for everyone, and he looks forward to a South Africa where basketball gets the credit it deserves and the focus is on youth development and improving the coaches.
