U18 youth basketball – 2010 Albert Schweitzer tournament

By on April 21, 2010 in News

The Albert Schweitzer tournament is a global tournament and is a celebration of global young basketball talent.

Started in 1958 in Mannheim, Germany, the tournament is usually held every two years and brings together the best youth (under 18) basketball teams from around the world.

Participation is said to be by invitation only, with many nations on a ‘waiting list’ hoping to get the chance to send their players in to battle.

The 25th Albert Schweitzer Tournament started on 3 April 2010 and included teams such as Germany, Brazil, Australia, Japan and the US (you can see a full list of teams here).

This year Australia walked away with top honours – imagine what this means to the future of their national team for upcoming World Championships! They beat Germany in the finals, the host team which has yet to put it’s name on the winners trophy, surely a sore loss for them coming so close after so long.

You have to wonder if we’ll be seeing any of these tournament players in the Youth Olympic Games in August – the 3-on-3 format may require slightly different skills, but these players now have invaluable international experience to carry through. Quite strangely though, Australia won’t have a mens team representing there so these guys will have to be happy with this one trophy for now.

You can see the award winners for the 2010 tournament here, and all the tournament match results here.
