2010 FIBA WOrld ChampionshipsWith the 2010 World Championships of Basketball coming up later this year, we thought some information about the participating teams would be useful. If you have something to share regarding the teams or the tournament, please let us know.

The Cote d’Ivoire team, ranked 40th in the FIBA rankings, could possibly make a surprise impact at the Championships.

The team twice won the the FIBA Africa Championships during the 1980′s, and after a long dry spell, finally managed to get a podium finish last year, winning a silver medal.

Team Tunisia has only competed twice at the World Championships in its history – both times in the same period of success at the Africa Championships in the early to mid 1980′s. If the team is able to recapture its form and repeat the success it achieved then, Cote d’Ivoire may just be able to surprise a few of the teams in its group.

The other element adding to the intrigue is the vast international experience of the team, with most of its players playing in college and professional leagues in Greece, Turkey, France and the United States. This is bound to play a role and will take away some of the competitors advantage on the court.

Cote d'Ivoire

Team Cote d’Ivoire find themselves in Group C, alongside Turkey, China, Russia, Greece and Puerto Rico. This is undoubtedly a tough group and while it may attract less attention than the other groups with more recognised international players, it stands to provide some seriously competitive games. Here’s hoping that Team Cote d’Ivoire will be the cat amongst the pigeons and add some unexpected sparkle to the group.

Darren spent many years playing basketball in Pretoria, searching out every possible way to gain extra inches on his vertical in order to disprove the theory that white men can't jump. After being distracted by the corporate world for several years, Darren returned to the game he loves to contribute in some way to its' future. Darren firmly believes we will see basketball in its rightful place as one of the top sports in South Africa, and that one of the keys to doing so is seeing information about the game made easily accessible to everyone.
