Day 25: Give your team a lift

This article is part of the series “30 days to being a better basketball player“.

A motivational lift, that is!

It doesn’t matter what role you have on the team – whether you’re a captain, a starter, a bench warmer or even just a spectator, every team and player values encouragement and support.

It doesn’t matter if they’re flying high or down in the dumps, everyone can use a lift.

Only say it if you mean it

I can’t say I’ve ever met someone who doesn’t appreciate a bit of encouragement. It’s free to give and means the world – but keep it real! Focus on a team or player’s positive aspects and good points. Fabricated flattery that isn’t genuine will probably just earn you a dirty look and kill some of the credibility you already have.

Next time you’re on the court and struggling, stop worrying about your own game and look at how others around you are doing. Forget about yourself and try pick them up; not only will it help distract you from focusing on the negatives, it’ll also get you into a positive frame of mind and it might just be the spark to get your team going when they need it most.

Get out there, have a bit of fun and spread some cheer on the court. Give your team a lift.

See ya later, motivator 🙂
