New strategy for Ekurhuleni Basketball

By on February 10, 2011 in News

In a general meeting held on 06 February 2010 at the Katlehong stadium a new strategy was adopted to take Ekurhuleni basketball forward. The meeting was organised in the background of the positive developments at the national (BSA) level through hosting of the Zone VI games in January, as well as the Gauteng Basketball Association (GBA) meeting in December 2010.

Organised in collaboration with the Sunday Runday games and the Gauteng Katlehong sport hub, the meeting resolved to re-form the Ekurhuleni Basketball League (EBL). The purpose of the EBL will be to develop and promote basketball by organising basketball events in the Ekurhuleni municipality. EBL existed previously but was disbanded to form the Ekurhuleni Basketball Association in line with GBA’s previous emphasis on forming District (municipality) associations. The decision to re-form EBL was taken after vigorous consultations with various stakeholders after the GBA December 2010 meeting. A majority of the stakeholders and those present at the general meeting felt that it was best to form the EBL as it is much simpler to form and more focused than an association.

Ekurhuleni Basketball Tour

As part of the new direction of basketball in Ekurhuleni the EBL took its first major decision. Informed by the reality of lack of funds for most township teams the EBL adopted the Tour format for the senior game. Based on the Tennis and Golf sport the Tour is a more flexible playing format as members can choose which event to attend without the punishment of being de-registered. Although the Tour is organised at tournaments it resembles a league in that it uses the number of games played and won to determine seeding and also at the end of the Tour the no.1 seed is declared the winner of the Tour. To ensure that there is not competition with the existing Sunday Runday basketball programme the Tour events will be organised once a month.

Ekurhuleni Basketball School League

The second major decision by the EBL was that the Tour will cater for senior games and that a school league will be organised for junior players. In this venture EBL will seek to partner with Gauteng government Schools Sport department to train administrators and coaches for the school league. This partnership will be in line with the memorandum of understanding between the departments of education and sport.
