Winelands Basketball League Inaugural Season 2011

By on March 2, 2011 in News

Winelands Basketball League kicks off in 2011 with the support of the Delta Trust to try and revive basketball in a forgotten but beautiful part of the Western Cape. With kyle Ray working closely with Aggrey Ofula to generate, educate and elevate the game of basketball in the area we are bound to see growth.

The Delta Trust was established in 2007 to focus on development projects in the wider Franschhoek Valley and Cape Winelands District. The aim of the Trust is to contribute to nation building by protecting and stimulating our local culture and heritage in a socially inclusive way. Obviously, education plays an important role in this..

  1. Joseph Mangadi says:

WOW, the EBL is very happy about this development. This is what building basketball from the grassroots should look like.

We hope and pray that this succeeds so that Ekurhuleni Basketball League can learn from this exercise. We also hope that this initiative, including the EBL’s, will encourage others to form Municipal Leagues. As the EBL we firmly believe that we cannot grow basketball by continuously over-concentrating on Elite Provincial and National leagues to the detriment of Municipal developmental leagues.

It is also our view that there is a market for Municipal leagues as not all players/team can afford the fees to consistently play at the Elite level, and that this market could be accomodated at the Municipal leagues. We hope that such leagues will not only bring back township teams such as Fresh All Stars, Leondale Chronics, Duduza Magic, Tembisa Hardrocks, Soweto Steelers, Sharpeville Taurus, Charioters.
