Ranking the last 10 NBA Championship Teams

By on June 28, 2014 in NBA

Larry-OBrien-Championship-TrophyThere’s an article out recently that attempts to rank the last 10 NBA Championship teams. For anyone who’s been a fan over that time it makes for interesting reading. Their top five choices are as follows:

5. 2007-08 Boston Celtics
Who can forget Kevin Garnett, Ray Allen and Paul Pierce tearing up the league and everyone’s hearts at the same time. An easy choice for the top five, it probably should’ve placed higher. Boston fans would agree anyway.

4. 2011-12 Miami Heat
The Big 3’s first title in Miami. Certainly an important one after Dallas spoiled the party the year before for this highly anticipated superstar team, but at the end of the day, when a team is put together solely to win a championship, how special can the win really be.

3. 2012-13 Miami Heat
See above. Don’t get me wrong, I’m happy LeBron got his ring, but you did get the feeling that they were expected to win the title. A title which San Antonio almost snatched right out of their hands.

2. 2008-09 Los Angeles Lakers
This one probably ranked this high because it was Kobe’s first title without Shaq. What can we say. Kobe is a winner, the best of his generation right up to before this year’s playoffs. One of the best all-time even. They beat the Magic, and the Celtics the following year to repeat as Champs

1. 2013-14 San Antonio Spurs
This year’s spectacular run for San Antonio couldn’t have been more impressive. After cleaning up in the regular season, this “old” team set some incredible all-time records and made history before our eyes. Watching Timmy get his fifth ring was certainly special and I don’t think I’d argue at all with this one being at the top of the list.

Where I would argue is that they had the 2005-06 Miami Heat in tenth. Taking into account the Dwyane Wade was only in his third season and Shaq wasn’t the Shaq of old, this team did incredibly well to pull of the big win. On top of this, they had the lowest regular season record of any of the champs in these ten seasons, and in my mind that only adds to the value of the win. It might not have had the high emotional value of this years Spurs win or the Celtics title run, but I’d easily give it third place ahead of those others simply because they shouldn’t have won it.
