Road to AfroBasket 2017: SA National team participating in BRICS games 2017

By on June 18, 2017 in News

This year has a different feel for the basketball loving public as far as the South African Men’s national team is concerned. After taking the difficult route of qualifying for the tournament via a best of 3 games decider against Zimbabwe in Johannesburg, the team is finally putting some mileage into their preparations by getting some games under their belt. They left South Africa en route to China to take part in the BRICS Games being held at the Guangzhou Baiyun International Convention Center from the 17 to 21 June 2017.

Amongst the participating countries are Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa in a variety of sports namely men’s basketball, women’s volleyball and wushu competitions and a total of 10 Gold medals on offer. The players and coaches will also be treated to some cultural events during the tournament which will bode well to some of the younger players that haven’t been involved on the international stage.

The national team has been affected by injuries to some of their key players but that has given an opportunity to coach Craig Gilchrist and his staff to have a look at some of the other talent the country has to offer ahead of the final squad announcement for Afrobasket 2017.

South Africa will be an unknown quantity for most teams at this tournament so they might have an advantage over their opponents and this will help build some experience and team chemistry ahead of the FIBA Afrobasket 2017.

The tournament is a round robin format with the top team taking it all. Here is the schedule:

18/06: Russia vs RSA
18/06: China vs India
19/06: India vs Russia
19/06: RSA vs China
20/06: India vs RSA
20/06: China vs Russia
