Notice from Basketball NEXT

Save the Date!

Following on the success of our clinic in May, we’ll be hosting a follow up clinic on Sunday 5 June 2011.

The clinic is open to all coaches who would like to learn how to coach basketball, or just to brush up on their fundamentals. We have combined this with a girls camp to promote the involvement of young women aged 14-17 in basketball. Please note that the entrance cost for coaches to the clinic is a basketball.

Because we don’t want to get rained out, we will be taking this next clinic to an indoor court. This means that we might ask players to donate a maximum of R20 to court hire should we not secure the full sponsorship. Please also note that at this stage this clinic will not come with certification of any kind.

The details:

Date: Sunday 5 June 2011
Time: 9am to 3pm
Bring your own lunch
Venue: RSVP to find out! will be at a venue in Johannesburg.

The Basketball NEXT programe is a not-for-profit initiative that was founded to support grassroots basketball.

For more details about Basketball NEXT or this upcoming event, please don’t hesitate to contact Basketball NEXT on 0733199439 (or basketballnext@gmail.com).

South Africa to Host FIBA Africa Zone VI qualifying tournament for AfroBasket and All Africa Games 9th-15th January @ the University of Pretoria Indoor Sport Center

The Soccer World Cup has certainly sparked excitement around sport in South Africa, and with it gone, its legacy remains as the country continues to host international events. Basketball is one sport that has benefited from such a legacy as South Africa looks to host the FIBA Zone VI qualifying tournament for AfroBasket and All Africa Games courtesy of the National Lottery Board (NLB), Gauteng Department of Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation in association with BasketballSA and FIBA Africa.

Many believe that the time for basketball to flourish in South Africa has finally come. As one would expect, this tournament should rekindle the excitement around the sport and hopefully start to see the 90’s growth in the sport happening again. With the launch of NBA Africa earlier this year, new found interest of the SABC in basketball and the possible launch of the National Basketball League (NBL) in 2011, this may well be exactly what basketball needs to get going again.

The Zone VI Qualifier games are to be held at the University of Pretoria (Tuks) Indoor Sports Arena which is one of South Africa’s premier indoor sporting facilities. To add to this, thanks to NLB funding, the venue will be kitted up with a basketball wooden floor, new electronic scoreboards, 24 second clocks and great branding around the venue to give it an international basketball event atmosphere. As a cherry on top, spectators will be able to witness Africa’s most successful basketball nation, Angola, with 10 Gold, 2 silver and 2 bronze medals in their last 16 appearances in the FIBA Africa Championship tournaments. Other countries taking part in both genders include:

Mozambique

Malawi

Zimbabwe

Zambia

And host country South Africa

and Botswana (Men only)

With Angola automatically qualifying to play in the FIBA Africa Championship by virtue of being the reigning champions, South Africa biggest threat would be Mozambique, whose basketball has greatly improved since the launch of their professional league.

So who will qualify? Come check it out for yourself. University of Pretoria Sports Center, 9th-15th January 2011.

There will be lots of entertainment and basketball related activities with great prizes for spectators so be there!

Fiat Sports Centre, Zone 9 Meadowlands, Soweto is where it all went down.

8 Teams signed up for the contest and boy did the teams bring their game, as teams from the surrounding hoods came through to pit their skills against each other. We witnessed some scintillating game-play with some teams dominating their opponents from start to finish in their match-ups, whilst other matches were hard fought with either side not allowing an inch for the opponents to gain the advantage.

As the contest goes someone had to win and someone had to loose. In the final match-up Jordan, Musa and Given (Red team) faced Mike, Mandla and Siphiwe (Burgundy team). Stage was set for an exciting encounter between the two teams since the Red team came into the finals as the favourites and the Burgundy team the underdogs.

Team Burgundy were a definite threat after they won their semi final game with a blazing come back from being 6-0 down to being eventual match winners at 8-6 final score edging out their opponents by 2 points! When it came down to it, the Burgundy team were no match for the Red team, they took charge of the game anihilated their opponents with a 12 point winning margin with scores ending up at 16-4.

The winning team members were each awarded a Fresh pair of Mark Ecko unltd kicks (Sneakers). In between the matches there was also a Dunk contest and a 3 point shoot out, with winners of each discipline also being awarded a pair of Mark Ecko unltd kicks(Sneakers).

All in all an awesome time was had by all and we look forward to the next Playground Legends contest. A big thank you to Themba Sefolo of Boywonder entertainment for organising this event. For more information you can contact Themba at themba@boywonder.co.za.
