Congratulations if you’ve managed to get through each of the 30 day sessions. We’ve covered a fairly wide variety of topics. Some you hopefully thought were very relevant to you, and others you were probably wondering why on earth we were writing about what we did.

So assuming there was at least one article that appealed to you, the last challenge for this 30 Day journey is to put into practice what you’ve learned and turn it into a habit.

Day 29: Practice the impossible

By Darren Gorton 30 Days Comments Off

This article is part of the series “30 days to being a better basketball player“.

I’m sure you would agree that basketball players are creative at heart. No less creative than artists painting a canvas or musicians composing a masterpiece, basketball players create art with the ball (and sometimes without it).

Today, we want you to keep this in mind.

Sure, every coach will encourage you not to take wild shots or try do impossible things out on the court. It is important to respect this and to keep the team’s best interests first, but it is still important to recognise the artist within you and to allow yourself some freedom of expression. How else can you keep the passion for the game burning hot inside!?

Day 27: Rules of engagement

By Darren Gorton 30 Days Comments Off

This article is part of the series “30 days to being a better basketball player“.

Rules are created for a reason. A lot of people don’t like them much, but that’s only because they don’t know how to use them to their advantage.

By knowing the rules of the game better than your opponent, you will have a definite advantage over them. After all, you can’t push the boundaries if you don’t even know where the boundaries are.

Day 25: Give your team a lift

By Darren Gorton 30 Days Comments Off

This article is part of the series “30 days to being a better basketball player“.

A motivational lift, that is!

It doesn’t matter what role you have on the team – whether you’re a captain, a starter, a bench warmer or even just a spectator, every team and player values encouragement and support.

It doesn’t matter if they’re flying high or down in the dumps, everyone can use a lift.

Day 24: Be the captain you want to see

By Darren Gorton 30 Days Comments Off

This article is part of the series “30 days to being a better basketball player“.

Not all captains are leaders.

Not all leaders are captains.

And you don’t have to be a captain to be a leader.

"You're never too old for a good game of follow the leader" by Jean-François Chénier, via flickr

Being a good team captain comes with many responsibilities and demands. It takes courage and strength to be a good one. You have to know how to be a good loser; and a better winner. You have to be able to pick your teammates up even when you’re down. You have to be a good leader.

Today’s point doesn’t need much explaining but it’s certainly important enough to highlight here.

If you ask any coach what the characteristics of a successful team or player are, there are two words you’ll hear more often than not: Continue reading »
