Back in March I wrote a blog on lopbasketball.co.za saying that I feel that Wits Alumni has a shot at the title. And guess what? I was right!!! My reasons for Wits Alumni winning the title was the depth of talent in the backcourt & the frontcourt. With players like Mfundo “Katlegong Killer” Dube, Onkgopotse “Walk the Talk” Ndlovu, Mboshe “You see it coming but can’t do anything about it” Ronunu, Dinesh “D-Nice” Mitchell, Tsakane “Real Deal” Ngobeni, Thabo “Spiderman” Letsebe, Quintin “The Pretty” Denyssen and Djo “Tsunami” Loo, Wits Alumni was bound to succeed this past season. I saw Egoli Magic play and felt that they were beatable. Egoli have Lesego “All 5 Positions” Molebatsi, Joseph “You can’t stop me” Mazibuko, Sifiso “3-point Assassin” Ngcobo, Castro “Solid as a Rock” , and Tuka “The Defence Rests it’s case” Motaung

During the week we got a glimpse of what was in store for us with the amazing poster for the event but on the day there was entertainment galore for the fans; there were dunks, blocks, spin moves and nerves from anxious players. In the ladies section, it was “Raptors vs. Scorpions”; with Scorpions having made huge strides to get this far, this was meant to be a close game and would set the record straight… The Men D2 final was supposed to be a lopsided affair in favour of the much younger “Momentum” team against their more experienced “Tlou MGI”. In the last game of the day, it was another clash between “Wits Alumni” and “Egoli Magic” for the king of the castle Men D1 title. There were trophies for the winners and hampers for the Most Valuable players on offer so the day was going to be interesting. Continue reading »

By Nthabiseng Mushi LOP, News View Comments

Basketball season is almost over for most leagues and LOP is no exception, hence the past weekend being playoffs and semi-finals. After the Raptors Ladies’ Team lost to (Phumla) and MGI, things didn’t look too good for the Soweto teams. The Raptors Men’s Team came head to head with Scorpions to what was quite an ego booster for Scorpions (having had a dismal season) and winning against Raptors was exactly what they needed to get their spirits up again. This past Sunday the two giants of the LOP Men’s 1st division faced off for the 4th time this year and the 2nd time during the LOP regular season. In what was a highly anticipated matchup, understandably there were high expectations for the quality of ball that was going to be played at Wits. In all 3 prior matchups Egoli Magic beat Wits Alumni. The first loss was in the LOP regular season matchup, followed by the R5000 Slam the trash game & the last match up was in the final of the Ashraf Lodewyk tournament. Continue reading »
