The 2009 edition of the Master was another outstanding event hosted by SAMBA at the University of Cape Town and the competition was excellent and done in good spirit once again.
It was good to see some of the familiar faces make their way from different parts of the country to take part in this event and reminisce about basketball, where it was and where it needs to go.

After another successful edition in 2008, this year the South African Masters Basketball Association tournament will take place at the University of Cape Town from the 24th of September to the 26th of September.
Here is the information and newsletter that I received regarding the tournament from Quentin Robinson:
There are less than 13 weeks left to our 25th tournament. More importantly, you have only have 11 weeks (the last day is 11th September) to register your team. Remember registration is not complete until your payment is received. Please note that due to the number of entries expected, no late team entries will be accepted.
The tournament will be played in the Sports Hall at the University of Cape Town (UCT). There are three courts, so there is going to be a busy programme. We are expecting to have over 35 teams with more than 70 games being played.
Dates for the 25th ANNUAL SAMBA TOURNAMENT
Please put these dates into your diary, your computer calendar, your cell phone and on your calendar behind the door of your favourite throne. Hey, even tell your mother-in-law if that will help you remember them.
The tournament will start on Thursday 24th September and will finish on Saturday 26th September. There will be a full schedule of games for all three days. The tournament will finish with an awards evening on the Saturday evening.

The last day of the 2008 Masters tournament in the City of Tshwane turned out to be an emotionally filled affair. It began with a game for 3rd and 4th place in the 30 to 39 years old division between “White Eagles” and “LOP All Stars”. As if to set the tone for the rest of the day, this game was a close affair that was eventually won by the “White Eagles”. In the second game of the day, the serious ladies competition saw the Natal team “Sharkettes” battle it out to a victory against a team from Mozambique called “Radio National A” to clinch 3rd place for the tournament. This game was followed another cross border tussle between “Coastal Sinners (RSA)” and “Dinossauros (Moz)” in the 50 years and more category which was won by Dinossauros. Continue reading »

Have you ever wondered what happened when some basketball players hang up the shoes and move into the other world of business, work, family, etc…? Some completely walk away from the sport all together while others take part in the Masters tournament held every 2 years. I had the privilege of attending the South African Masters Games held in the City of Tshwane from the 24-28 September 2008, where I discovered those talented players of years gone by. For the young basketball generation of today, some of the faces and names would not be familiar but the moves and passion shown on the court by the participants at the “masters” have stood the test of time. While sitting there watching some very entertaining games, I felt like an ostrich that had his head in the sand for too long because this was my first Masters tournament and there had already been 27.
