WCBA league: Vikings trash UWC by a ton
If you had the opportunity to watch UWC play over the last few years they would have given you hope that they were making progress in the right direction. But this year, their team doesn’t look like they have the energy, passion or commitment to compete with the likes of Montana Vikings, who showed that they are in a class of their own.
In a game that was marred by countless mistakes from both teams, the team with the better quality and sound game plan came out on top. Vikings were never in danger of losing this contest. If this was a boxing match, UWC would have thrown in the towel in the first round. Continue reading »

After 2 gruelling days of basketball for all teams involved in the WCBA tournament, it all came down to another clash between the Vikings and the CATS in the Men’s final. These two teams have dominated the basketball landscape in Western province for the last few years and Montana Vikings look like they have stolen a step on their opponents in 2010. In the ladies final, it was home team UCT vs. CATS ladies. Having lost to UCT in the USSA qualifiers final, CATS wanted to set the record straight and they came out all guns blazing. ‘The future lies in their hands and it’s our responsability to give them the best we have to make them better person tomorrow’ says Emmanuel MAVOMO
First game of the best of 3 final. CPUT had a slow start to the game, be it nerves, anxiety, not knowing what offensive tactics to expect from Truworths Future Stars. It was a tense start from the Cats camp, but to those who love the game and get lost into feeling it, it was obvious that by the time we hit half time, we had put on our full armour
.
It was a close score tie in the first quarter, each team scoring for each basket the other team put in. Future Stars pushed hard on Defence and made it hard for easy basket scores for our ladies. But come the latter part of the 2nd quarter, our offensive upped and baskets were good from penetrations to jumpers, making it more difficult for the Truworths Future Stars team to close in on us as a result. CPUT came into game 2 of the 3 game series knowing that they needed to win to give their title aspirations a boost. The game was held at a packed UCT court with half the hall filled with CPUT supporters and half the hall filled with Vikings supporters.
In brief, CPUT started like a house on fire and built a nice little lead, but as the quarters came and went, Vikings got stronger and were the more composed team of the two. CPUT who were the defending champions got tired and without a bench to help out the first unit they ran out of steam and were in foul trouble early…
Looking back at the game, Vikings were much too strong for CPUT in the post and with a 10 point lead going into the fourth quarter, the supporters thought it was all done to get the party going. Unfortunately CPUT were not going to just give their trophy away without a fight and they made a run that saw them tie the game at one point and they even had a few opportunities to take the lead but missed crucial free throw and wrong decisions down the line cost them the game. Final score: Vikings 83 – 82 CPUT
In the first game of a potential 3 game series in the WCBA men finals, The Vikings took control of the series after trading early blows with the CPUT Cats and coming out on top.
Starters: CPUT (6, 9, 15, 4, 13), Vikings (7, 14, 8, 9, 5)
The game started off at a high tempo with both teams exchanging baskets and making plenty of turnovers in the process. In the early exchanges, Vikings 5 had a good offensive game going with great offensive rebounds and assists under the basket. CPUT base their game on the running game and they were running the break at every opportunity and it was working great for them. Vikings had to figure out a way to stop the break so that they could minimize the damage. Continue reading »
