After months of deliberations, it was concluded by the directors that Pro Sport is willing to resume running basketball in Gauteng and possibly nationally, pending permits and talks with the higher powers. With the successful delivery of the FIFA 2010 World Cup, it is clear that sport in South Africa can contribute to the economy of this country and basketball is no exception. Youth Olympic Games basketball results
Better late than never… here’s a quick roundup of the Youth Olympic Games basketball results that finished recently.

The YOG basketball tournament group stages have come to an end after day 5. Eight boys teams and eight girls teams now go forward to play in the quarter finals.
The Philippines beat South Africa 26-12 to seal SA’s boys’ fate as SA bowed out of the tournament with a won-lost record of 0-4.
The teams that will be progressing are:
South Africa is taking part in the men’s basketball at the Youth Olympic Games, with these being the first ever Games taking place.
South Africa was selected to participate along with 19 other countries, both developing and developed. With SA being drawn in Group D along with the Phillipines, Croatia, the US Virgin Islands and Spain (their senior team is current men’s FIBA world champions), it was never going to be easy.
Progress so far
The Youth Olympic Games are underway, and if reports are to be believed, the rollout of the new FIBA 33 format basketball tournament has been one of the highlights so far.

“While the majority of the sports at these Youth Olympics are no different in structure to their counterparts at the senior Olympic Games, basketball has decided to be different.
Fresh in almost everyone’s memory is 11 July 2010, when Spain’s national soccer (football) team won the FIFA 2010 World Cup, played in South Africa.
Perhaps not as easily or quickly remembered is 3 September 2006 when Spain’s national basketball team won the 2006 FIBA Basketball World Championships in Japan.
The inaugural FIBA u/17 Championships drew to a close this past weekend.
The United States of America are the first ever winner of the FIBA U17 World Championship. In an entertaining gold medal game the squad of coach Don Showalter emerged as deserving winners. The final score of 111-80 meant nothing less than an eighth victory in in as many games. Runners-up Poland came into this matchup unbeaten thus far, but once more delivered great heart and sportsmanship for 40 minutes.
