But none of them symbolizes more the adidas Nations projectthan Okhlahoma Thunder’s Serge Ibaka from RD Congo. Serge ibaka opened everybody’seyes on the African huge talent, and its natural ‘giving back’ approach with younger kids.He was discovered at the camp and was picked in the first round of the NBA draft the following year.

Emmanuel Mavomo, Developer of African Basketball Community — announced the roster for the annual adidas Nations Africa, the premier international grassroots basketball program. adidas Nations will take place at the University of Johannesburg, soweto campus June 15-18, with a High profile Exhibition game opposing African pro International to the South african National team, June 18 at 4:30 p.m. @ the Arena of the University of Johannesburg, soweto campus.

The elite 18-and-under players from six African teams including DR Congo, Cameroun, Angola, Mozambique, Rwanda and South Africa, will train and compete in the prestigious annual program. Current NBA players, highly esteemed NBA veterans and collegiate players join the global program as head coaches, mentors and camp counselors.

NBA players Serge Ibaka (Oklahoma Thunders), Luc Richard Mbah Hamoute (Milwaukee Bucks), Hamady N’diaye (Washington Wizzards), along with Europeans pros such as Yohann Sangare, Karim Ouatara, to name a few will counsel and mentor players throughout the weekend. Former players and head coaches will act as head coaches.

A pre-selection campaign launched throughout the participating countries has began on april 16th in Yaounde , and schedule April 23rd in Luanda, May 7th in Kigali and May 8th in Maputo.

adidas Nations emphasizes adidas’ core belief that success in the game of basketball comes from playing as a team. The multi-faceted international curriculum includes expert training and strategy tips, comprehensive workout sessions and scrimmages. Off-court elements essential to all athletes’ success, such as nutritional education, global interactions, leadership and philanthropy, are woven into the program’s agenda. Athletes’ Performance, the leader in sports training, directs and engages the participating players through advanced programs to supplement their on-court training and provide them training tools for their future basketball careers at the collegiate and professional level.

The culmination of adidas Nations will feature a championship and the opportunity for the elite players to represent Africa at the adidas nations global experience in Los Angeles in August 2011

General admission tickets are available for R40 at www.computickets.co.za or by calling 0027827610641.

Giving Back International, a french based NPO together with Trace Tv will end this philanthropic youth week by hosting a fund-raiser Gala dinner for the Desmond Tutu foundation on June 18th at the Hyatt Regency in Rosebank, Johannesburg

Basketball fans can look forward to the AND1 team touring Maputo, Johannesburg and Durban courtesy of DStv. The AND1 Streetball Team have toured in 15 countries around the world, showcasing some of the best and never before seen basketball tricks and moves. You might have also caught the team in action via Playstation and Xbox games.

The AND 1 LIVE TOUR has been touring competitively since 2000. This tour is a guaranteed crowd pleasing and high energy event that has traveled to select cities around the United States and around the world. Says Colleen Goodman, Marketing Manager at DStv “We are proud to be associated with the AND1 Tour, this demonstrates our commitment and dedication to the sport of basketball and we are happy to be showcasing this unique and extraordinary playground-style basketball to the youth of Southern Africa. However more importantly is the associated message that stresses the importance of education and staying away from drugs, alcohol and gangs”.

The tour will also serve as a reminder to basketball fans that the NBA playoff season will be starting on ESPN, on DStv from May the 6th. . The defending champion’s The Los Angeles Lakers remain favourites to repeat as NBA finalists, but their path to a 17th title which would leave them tied with the Boston Celtics for the most titles in NBA history remains blocked by a tough group of Western Conference contenders led by the San Antonio Spurs, Dallas Mavericks and Oklahoma City Thunder, the latter once again getting sharp play from last year’s scoring leader Kevin Durant.

The AND1 Live tour will tip off in Maputo on the 6th of May. Followed by Johannesburg on 8th of May at UJ Soweto Campus and concludes in Durban on the 14th of May at UKZN Durban Westville. Doors open at 1pm at all SA venues and tickets are R100.

Winelands Basketball League kicks off in 2011 with the support of the Delta Trust to try and revive basketball in a forgotten but beautiful part of the Western Cape. With kyle Ray working closely with Aggrey Ofula to generate, educate and elevate the game of basketball in the area we are bound to see growth.

The Delta Trust was established in 2007 to focus on development projects in the wider Franschhoek Valley and Cape Winelands District. The aim of the Trust is to contribute to nation building by protecting and stimulating our local culture and heritage in a socially inclusive way. Obviously, education plays an important role in this..

Try growing a brand new pair of legs, and then having to learn to walk all over again. Personally, having not played for over two months and having been forced to keep away from the courts all together (because temptations when around the courts are far too great), everything just seemed slow when getting back on the court. It was a bit of a struggle! I had to learn to put one foot in front of the other…before I could jump and make a decent lay up. I thought I was the only one experiencing this momentary regression until I overheard some of the fellas commenting about the very same thing! But because the very reason why we as the League host pre-season friendlies is to encourage people to get back to basketball shape, it served as both an indicator (of the current skill and fitness level) and reminder (for teams to start working toward a certain level of competition). Hopefully these games will encourage teams to improve on certain areas of their game in which they lack.

The legs may have seemed slightly wobbly at first…but with more court time, surely the body can be reminded of what it can do!

I’ve always been fascinated by the idea of a friendly game: typically one gets the sense that there is nothing at stake and so, by that very supposition, the competitiveness will ease up. Basketball is one sport I know wherein competition and rivalry ensues, and intensity eventually heightens, when teams face each other.

Game 1: Procter & Gamble vs. Western Ballers

One of the joys of being part of the League is that, shortly before the Season begins, I get to meet very cool people, and also reunite with some lads from back in my early basketball days!

Having arrived well before the schedule time for the game, I found both teams just shooting around…and some members already discussing game plays! This particular game brought out some old teammates of mine from the Varsity days!

As new additions to the League, what impressed the most about both of these teams was their preparedness to play. Having just recently formed the sides, they instantly showed signs of unison and a competitive spirit normally found in teams that have been together for a while.

The PROCTER & GAMBLE side, led by their nifty point-guard Sifiso, looked like they were the newer team out of the two…but the way they played was remarkable. More than anything, their hustle plays kept them in the game. And their guys on the sideline continually kept cheering and spurring them on!

Because of the un-numbered tops, it was a bit challenging to separately identify the players. But there’s one play in particular that stood out: their center had just blocked the ball and claimed possession, and then handed it to Sifiso, who ran it down the left flank and then fed it to one of his teammates inside the key; but instead of him going up for a deuce, he spotted another of his teammates (seemingly someone who they all trust with sinking treys), patiently waiting behind the three-point line. He received the ball and, unflappably, just took the shot: swooosh! The wonderful things that happen when a team shares the ball!

But then on the other side stood the WESTERN BALLERS, led by Ivan (I call him “Flash Gordon”), who was causing problems for P&G on the boards and put-backs! The entire team was on some other…! The passes were uncanny – too quick for the eye to record! And then Jerome (no.10) just kept on throwing those needlepoint-accurate three-point daggers without much stop.

Overall…it was a spectacular game, revealing one very important quality that no team can do without: playing the game as one!

And when one of the lads from P&G walked off the court, after shaking hands with one of the WESTERN BALLERS, and remarked that they now know what they must do to win next time around and that they eagerly looked forward to more games, I immediately ticked the empty check-box next to the words “Purpose of the Friendlies”! Done!

Full regulation: Western Ballers (32): Procter & Gamble (17)

Game 2: Alexander Forbes vs. Standard Bank

The Bankers arrived shortly after the preceding game had started, and were posted up courtside. The ALEXANDER FORBES boys soon also began showing face…all very much eager to just get back on the court!

Immediately after the first game concluded, the lads burst on to the courts as though they had just broke free from some constraint–straps!

The ref blew for 1…and we cleared the courts.

It seemed like it had been a long time coming; mind you, although both having been part of the 2010 Season, these two teams had never met before!

Tip off and it was a go!

The game seemed a bit sluggish at first…but soon took a rapid about-face. Farie (STANDARD BANK) seemed to have begun missing work and just started banking in shots! A quick spin, followed by a deadly pull-up jumper! Sabelo got it going down low, working the baseline like a naval architect! Yeh…the well-oiled STANDARD BANK machine looked unstoppable there for a minute…but then the Forbes’ boys had other ideas! The defence-jaws began clamping down and Bankers were stopped in their tracks! On two notable plays down the stretch, A-T-I put the stuffing in the big bird: first he just sprang and blocked a lay-up that we all had counted as a basket; how he got there, we don’t know! For the second one, he simply pressed his thumb on the pinhead and left it to stick on the backboard.

Oh…but then came KG’s play up top of the key: he took his defender to the right, a quick cross-over to the left, the defender’s legs almost criss-crossing, and then a long beautifully arched money shot! Man oh man…!

But on that day, it seemed like the Bankers would not fall: they kept about two points ahead throughout the better part of the game, and when it mattered they secured it once and for all! Great game overall!

Full regulation: Standard Bank (34): Alexander Forbes (25)

Game 3: Legends vs. Bethusile

The game between these two super teams rounded up the day’s events: last season’s semifinalist, BETHUSILE, locking horns with the current championship title holder, LEGENDS! Before the game even began, we knew we were in for a spectacular showdown!

The rigorous and disciplined worksmanship of the BETHUSILE side, versus the confident laid back, nonchalant, “we gots this” game attitude of the LEGENDS!

In terms of talent and basketball craftiness, both teams were somewhat equally equipped…so it made it that much interesting to know which one of the two teams would ultimately take the game!

A couple of changes were instantly recognisable: Tshiamo, who was part of BETHUSILE’s roster last season, now sported the LEGENDS’uniform; same is said of Jojo, who was with Momentum! And so, before the game, I told Tshiamo to do like LeBron did when he first faced Cleveland standing on the opposite side of the court! He replied affirmatively…and obliged! The first few minutes of the game already comprised highlights from both teams! Q(uintin) of LEGENDS’fame caught fire early from behind the trey-line! There’s not much anyone can do when he gets on that streak! J-O was doing his weavin’ and beavin’…”handlin’ the rock like Van Exel”! The rest of the LEGENDS also began clicking…and when that happens: oh boy!

But this game was definitely not one-sided: the BETHUSILE side easily boasts some of the nicest players around…and they got down for their crown! There was a chap (whose name I unfortunately have forgotten) who was sniping the hell out of those threes from the same left-corner spot! He hardly missed! Man! Hlogi (no.12) was another problem: you don’t find too many point-guards that run a break like that – hot knife…butter! BETHUSILE is looking very impressive, and you can tell that there’s a concerted effort of hard work from every single member of the team to win!

But as it played out, it was soon clear that the defending champs were going to clinch it! The game produced a tie only in the third quarter; but as for the other quarters, LEGENDS led throughout.

What a splendid game it turned out to be!

Full regulation: Legends (48): Bethusile (36)

On to the next one!

In a general meeting held on 06 February 2010 at the Katlehong stadium a new strategy was adopted to take Ekurhuleni basketball forward. The meeting was organised in the background of the positive developments at the national (BSA) level through hosting of the Zone VI games in January, as well as the Gauteng Basketball Association (GBA) meeting in December 2010.

Organised in collaboration with the Sunday Runday games and the Gauteng Katlehong sport hub, the meeting resolved to re-form the Ekurhuleni Basketball League (EBL). The purpose of the EBL will be to develop and promote basketball by organising basketball events in the Ekurhuleni municipality. EBL existed previously but was disbanded to form the Ekurhuleni Basketball Association in line with GBA’s previous emphasis on forming District (municipality) associations. The decision to re-form EBL was taken after vigorous consultations with various stakeholders after the GBA December 2010 meeting. A majority of the stakeholders and those present at the general meeting felt that it was best to form the EBL as it is much simpler to form and more focused than an association.

Ekurhuleni Basketball Tour

As part of the new direction of basketball in Ekurhuleni the EBL took its first major decision. Informed by the reality of lack of funds for most township teams the EBL adopted the Tour format for the senior game. Based on the Tennis and Golf sport the Tour is a more flexible playing format as members can choose which event to attend without the punishment of being de-registered. Although the Tour is organised at tournaments it resembles a league in that it uses the number of games played and won to determine seeding and also at the end of the Tour the no.1 seed is declared the winner of the Tour. To ensure that there is not competition with the existing Sunday Runday basketball programme the Tour events will be organised once a month.

Ekurhuleni Basketball School League

The second major decision by the EBL was that the Tour will cater for senior games and that a school league will be organised for junior players. In this venture EBL will seek to partner with Gauteng government Schools Sport department to train administrators and coaches for the school league. This partnership will be in line with the memorandum of understanding between the departments of education and sport.

AS the curtain closed on the successful Fiba Zone VI Games for both men and women on Saturday held at the University of Pretoria’s indoor sports centre, the South African basketball should have lots to cheer about with the men’s team qualifying for the All Africa Games to be hosted in Mozambique.

The South African men’s senior team were unfortunate, though, to miss out on qualification for the Fiba African Championship or Afrobasket, to be held in the Ivory Coast after being edged out 78-74 by their more polished Mozambican opponents the last game of the competition at the weekend.

Mozambique were lead to victory by a game-high 18 points by forward Ocatvio Mogolico and had seven rebounds four of which came at the offensive end in the game, while his teammates, Custodio Muchata, Stelio Nualia and Selvio Nuaila scored 15, 13 and 11 points respectively. While South Africa where given a fighting chance by point guard Vincent Ntunja and centre Cedric Kalombo, who both scored 15 points in the game.

South Africa also struggled with the Mozambican attack as the team collected 36 team fouls -nine which came in the first stanza – compared to the 21 recorded by their neighbours and the team fouls proved to be their undoing at the end of the game with, Neo Mothiba, Thabo Letsebe, Thabang Kgwedi and Kalombo, who all collecting five team fouls and thus being ejected from the game in the fourth quarter.

Mozambique took charge of the game in the first quarter taking a 14-12 lead, but South Africa would come back strongly in the second period, with Kalombo, unleashing his full repertoire of basketball skills scoring seven points, four coming from inside the perimeter and a three pointer, where he beat a Mozambican opponent with a between the legs crossover and then he positioned himself to score. Ntunja, who came off the bench and offered explosive penetrating runs into the Mozambican defence to notch up six points as South Africa took a 35-32 lead going into the penultimate quarter.

South Africa started the quarter well and looked good for their lead and Kalombo, who was three for three from outside the perimeter scored to extend the host nation’s lead. Ntunja scored a two pointer but was fouled and completed his three point play at the line. But at 55-46 South Africa’s Achilles Heel came back to haunt them as the foul count increased and Mozambique started growing in confidence they started making runs into the homeside’s defence.

Two three pointers by Letela and Augusto Motos brought the visitors back into the game and with the scores at 57- 54 and it was make or break for both sides going into the final quarter. South Africa found themselves on the backfoot as Kalombo, fouled after accumilating five fouls as the hosts began to breakdown on defence and were outscored by 24 points to 17 as Africa went on to lose three more players, thus ending whatever hope they had of beating Mozambique and also losing out on qualifying for the Afrobasket competition.

Meanwhile in an earlier game also on Saturday night the South African senior women’s team lost again to the Zimbabwean counterparts 53-49 in a game which the hosts needed to win to qualify for the All Africa Games.

With Mozambique already qualified as hosts South Africa had to battle it out with their cross border neighbours for a spot in the Games. The hosts battled hard with Nosipho Njokweni and Philadelphia scoring 13 and 10 points for the ladies but it was not be as the Zimbabweans, who were lead in scoring by Dorcas Marondera with 14 points, Rachel Makoni and Charity Chigumba who both scored 11 points, at the end had just enough fire power to carry them through to victory and winning themselves a ticket to Mozambique to compete in the women’s Baketball competition of the All Africa Games

Zimbabwe women met Zambia for their second game against each other in the tournament. The first time these two teams met, it was a massacre for the Zimbabwean team as they marched over a Zambian team that could not seem to get the ball into the basket.

Fast forward to the second game between these two teams – going into the game, it was almost obvious that the Zimbabwean team would dominate like they did in the first game, right? Wrong? Zambia started the game and outhustled, outran and outscored the Zimbabwean team 19-14 in the first quarter. That’s more points than they scored in the entire first half in the first game between these teams. The Zimbabwean team was playing their reserves most of the game – none of the usual starters played more than 10 minutes.

In the second quarter, after a well deserved tongue lashing from their coach, Zimbabwe returned with purpose and scored 27 points in the period, with Zambia only managing 7. But then a lacklustre offensive showing slowed them down again in the third quarter as Zambia was double teaming the point guard up top, forcing turnovers and getting fast break baskets.

Zimbabwe was having trouble containing P Mbale (15), who caused problems for them in the first game also. M Wakumelo (5) also scored 4 out of 6 attempts from beyond the arc en route to a team high 12 points for Zambia. Both teams scored 13 apiece in the third period and Zimbabwe had a 15 point lead heading into the fourth quarter.

Zambia seemed to then run out of gas in this one and Zimbabwe won it 74 – 51. The player of the game was Ethel Luta(15 Zimbabwe), who got a double – double with 10 points and 12 rebounds, after not playing at all in their last game against South Africa.

Top performers:

P Mbale (15 Zambia) – 10 points

M Wakumelo (5 Zambia) – 12 points

Ethel Luta (15 Zimbabwe) – 10 points, 12 rebounds, 3 assists

Isobel Tengende (13 Zimbabwe) – 9 points in 8 minutes of action.
