Fiat Sports Centre, Zone 9 Meadowlands, Soweto
The day came and went with the Playground Legends standing tall on the day. Fiat Sports Centre, Zone 9 Meadowlands, Soweto is where it all went down.
8 Teams signed up for the contest and boy did the teams bring their game, as teams from the surrounding hoods came through to pit their skills against each other. We witnessed some scintillating game-play with some teams dominating their opponents from start to finish in their match-ups, whilst other matches were hard fought with either side not allowing an inch for the opponents to gain the advantage.
As the contest goes someone had to win and someone had to loose. In the final match-up Jordan, Musa and Given (Red team) faced Mike, Mandla and Siphiwe (Burgundy team). Stage was set for an exciting encounter between the two teams since the Red team came into the finals as the favourites and the Burgundy team the underdogs.
There are many ways to enjoy the game of basketball, and one way to keep yourself and your friends/team enthused is to play some different games when you’re playing/practicing/scrimmaging.
There are lots of different ways to play , here are just a few that you can use:
South Africa was selected to participate along with 19 other countries, both developing and developed. With SA being drawn in Group D along with the Phillipines, Croatia, the US Virgin Islands and Spain (their senior team is current men’s FIBA world champions), it was never going to be easy.
The Youth Olympic Games are underway, and if reports are to be believed, the rollout of the new FIBA 33 format basketball tournament has been one of the highlights so far.
“While the majority of the sports at these Youth Olympics are no different in structure to their counterparts at the senior Olympic Games, basketball has decided to be different.
Here’s a first look at the Singapore basketball team that’ll be representing at the Youth Olympic Games in August (I believe they’re the team in white).
Ain’t Youtube great – getting to scout the other teams from the other side of the world
The clip is just over 3 minutes long. There are a couple of good moves in there, and the big guy seems to have speed to complement his size. No idea how these guys compare to the teams from other countries though, but interesting nonetheless.
For the last few years, FIBA has been testing a cool format for a 3-on-3 tournament. With the upcoming Youth Olympic Games [more news to follow soon], we’ll see the fruit of it as FIBA endorses this style tournament for the first time.
This tournament type is cleverly called “33″ – a reference to both the 3-on-3 style and the winning number of points.
The rules of FIBA 33 are meant to be simple – a team consists of four players (three on court and one substitute) and one coach. The game is played on a half court, on one basket, in two periods of five minutes each. Most of the FIBA rules regarding scoring and fouling are in effect. The team that is first to score 33 points wins – if neither team reaches 33 by the end of the game, the team leading the game is the winner.
We’ve had a few questions around how to set up a basketball tournament so we thought it might be good to put some guidance up here.
Why bother with tournaments?
While it can be difficult to set up and run a basketball tournament, always remember why you’re doing it – there’s very little that basketball players love as much as the chance to play! And tournaments are an awesome way to bring the community together, meet new players and develop the game.
Setting up tournaments is a big job, so make sure you cover the basic points first before you start to worry about the details.
