BSA says basketball on leaps, bounds in SA

July 8, 2009 in News

“Interesting article in the Sowetan”

The new Basketball South Africa (BSA) executive committee has been asked by the world governing body to help in fast-tracking the development of the game in the country.

This would be achieved by establishing competitive leagues for both men and women at all levels, BSA says.

This was delivered to BSA president Malesela Maleka and his deputy, Malumbete Ralethe, by the Federation of International Basketball Association (Fiba) on Saturday at a meeting here at the World Student Games to discuss the revival of the sport in SA.

“Fiba have asked us to establish competitive leagues, be it amateur or professional. We fully support their call because it is in line with the resolutions of the new executive committee to create a platform for both young and old South Africans to play basketball on a regular basis,” said Maleka.

The stars of Episcopal boy’s basketball team have been on a remarkable journey together.

Wednesday, February 04, 2009

Living about 8,000 miles away from home, it’s hard to believe Episcopal’s Given Kalipinde and Yao Sithole say they don’t miss home all that much.

Then again, watching them comfortably answer a reporter’s questions over the din of teammates teasing them about the game that just ended, girlfriends, weird looking clothes, and whatever else teenagers think is worthy of postgame fodder – all while the senior duo suppresses their own laughter – could be enough proof for their claim.

“The team doesn’t look at us as outsiders, they just look at us as one of the guys,” said Sithole, a 6-foot-5 forward from South Africa. “They joke around a lot, but they’re great guys.”

SA U20 teams settle in at the HPC

October 15, 2008 in Development, News

As preparation for the Zone 6 Games taking place in Potchefstroom in December 2008, selected boys and girls gathered at the High Performance Centre in the city of Tshwane from 29 September – 4 October 2008 for a camp. After arriving from different parts of the country, the players spent the first day acclimatising to the very hot weather conditions that Pretoria had to offer during that week while they were waiting for the late arrivals.

With both teams selected during the 2007 IPTs held in Pietermaritzburg, the coaches used the opportunity offered by these camps to assess and prepare for the games. Before the coaches could get the camp underway, they soon realised that they would not be able to use the LC de Villiers Indoor facility due to a communication error between various parties so they had to have their practices outside.
