WCBA 2010 finals fixtures
So the weekend was jam packed with some local basketball in Cape Town. There was an upset on day one of the playoffs in the Mens division, with the Vets showing Montana Vikings that they still had enough in their tank by beating them in Game 1 on Friday night. You could say that there was a bit of complacency from the defending champs but they rectified it on sunday by taking Game 2. Now it’s on to Game 3 to decide on who will advance to meet the CPUT Cats who defeated Montana Vikings 2nd team. Continue reading »

One of the most exciting recent developments in South African basketball is the launch of the Township Basketball League (“TBL”) in the Western Cape.
Their first event took place in Khayelitsha in May 2009, and they now have a high school division with 360 youth registered to play basketball in Khayelitsha across 14 schools.
Kahuthando is the spearhead behind this amazing initiative. They are a non-profit organisation, unfunded and resourced by volunteers in South Africa and overseas.
The 2009 edition of the Master was another outstanding event hosted by SAMBA at the University of Cape Town and the competition was excellent and done in good spirit once again.
It was good to see some of the familiar faces make their way from different parts of the country to take part in this event and reminisce about basketball, where it was and where it needs to go.

The USSA team recently came back from Serbia where they didn’t fare really well, finishing last. We can be quick to point the blame on the coaches or players but I think that before we do that we should look at the planning that went into getting the team selected and ready to participate in this tournament. We don’t seem to learn from our mistakes and year in and year out we sent teams to international tournaments hoping that they will pull off miracles and win a game or two or even qualify in the case of qualifiers.
The young men and the coaches that went to represent South Africa at the World Student Games went there with the best intentions but with the wrong tools or not enough of them. It’s like going to play a basketball game and when you get there you realize that you didn’t bring any balls and the hoops are not available but there are two teams and all the officials are there. My point is that I feel that this team was set up to fail from the time they were selected at the USSA tournament at the University of Pretoria earlier in the year. The team didn’t have enough depth at the post position and if that says that we don’t have depth at our tertiary institutions then all I can say is that the game at senior level is as doomed as it is at junior level. As far as the coaches are concerned, I can guarantee that there is no coach that goes into a big tournament like this with the intention to lose or not do well, so before we criticize the coaches we should ask ourselves if they were given the right material to work with from the start… That my take on the World Student Games where South Africa came 25th out of 25 teams… Better planning from USSA next time might help the teams achieve better. After another successful edition in 2008, this year the South African Masters Basketball Association tournament will take place at the University of Cape Town from the 24th of September to the 26th of September.
Here is the information and newsletter that I received regarding the tournament from Quentin Robinson:
There are less than 13 weeks left to our 25th tournament. More importantly, you have only have 11 weeks (the last day is 11th September) to register your team. Remember registration is not complete until your payment is received. Please note that due to the number of entries expected, no late team entries will be accepted.
The tournament will be played in the Sports Hall at the University of Cape Town (UCT). There are three courts, so there is going to be a busy programme. We are expecting to have over 35 teams with more than 70 games being played.
Dates for the 25th ANNUAL SAMBA TOURNAMENT
Please put these dates into your diary, your computer calendar, your cell phone and on your calendar behind the door of your favourite throne. Hey, even tell your mother-in-law if that will help you remember them.
The tournament will start on Thursday 24th September and will finish on Saturday 26th September. There will be a full schedule of games for all three days. The tournament will finish with an awards evening on the Saturday evening.

KHAYELITSHA, CAPE TOWN, May 17, 2009 /PressRelease/ — Kahuthando a Khayelitsha based Non Profit organization will host its first community event on May 30th to bring together hundreds of township youth to learn how to play basketball. It will also be a chance for experienced players to pass on their skills to those that haven’t had exposure to Basketball previously. Continue reading »
