CBL SA Pre-season friendlies 2011

February 15, 2011 in News, Other

Try growing a brand new pair of legs, and then having to learn to walk all over again. Personally, having not played for over two months and having been forced to keep away from the courts all together (because temptations when around the courts are far too great), everything just seemed slow when getting back on the court. It was a bit of a struggle! I had to learn to put one foot in front of the other…before I could jump and make a decent lay up. I thought I was the only one experiencing this momentary regression until I overheard some of the fellas commenting about the very same thing! But because the very reason why we as the League host pre-season friendlies is to encourage people to get back to basketball shape, it served as both an indicator (of the current skill and fitness level) and reminder (for teams to start working toward a certain level of competition). Hopefully these games will encourage teams to improve on certain areas of their game in which they lack. Read the rest of this entry →

Pro Sport Consulting looking to bring basketball back with a ‘BANG’

September 2, 2010 in GBL, News

After months of deliberations, it was concluded by the directors that Pro Sport is willing to resume running basketball in Gauteng and possibly nationally, pending permits and talks with the higher powers. With the successful delivery of the FIFA 2010 World Cup, it is clear that sport in South Africa can contribute to the economy of this country and basketball is no exception. We believe that everyone in the world of basketball should find their playing field and make their involvement worthwhile for themselves for whatever reason they see fit. The Big Jumpoff GBL and CBL

March 7, 2009 in Basketball Diaries

Right now in my life, I think I have 3 of the best jobs in the world.  My first job is loving and living basketball enough that I can put a few words together that not only entertain, but hopefully educates certain people about the game.  My other job is being part of a group of people that are about to break a few rules with a website that’s combining the best of both worlds; HipHop and basketball (www.magenge.co.za).  My other job, which I hold dearest to my heart, is being the best father to the most adorable daughter in the world.

With a lot of things in the world not going so well, I think that it is always important for each of us to strive to make ourselves and those around us better people.  Time waits for no man and as a wise man (Common) once said, nobody speaks truth better than time itself because you can never rewind it.  My truth, as I sit here grinding, is that the time has finally come for basketball to take its place as “The Game of Life”.  For some, Barack Obama might finally be a good reason for them to finally seek knowledge about basketball, those were my sentiments on Sunday as I was reading City Press and seeing a picture of the man balling.  This, a day after the president attended an NBA game between his hometown Chicago Bulls against the Washington Wizards, the game can only grow stronger across the world.  Maybe this also spells more acknowledgement and respect for our involvement in the game over the years.

GBL 2009 looking at the season ahead

February 28, 2009 in GBL

With the new Gauteng Basketball season scheduled to start this weekend of the 8th of March 2009, a lot of talk is doing the rounds on the basketball island; so definitely I’m keeping both eyes and ears on the streets for all you basketball junkies. Mybasketball caught up with some of the ballers who will be featured in the premier section and what was said was very interesting to say the least…

There will be a lot of changes in some of the teams especially since some of the dipper dandies are hitting the big time and playing for the Varsities; specifically in the ladies section; making both the league and USSA interesting. Legendary teams like Tuks (The University of Pretoria) losing the USSA M.V.P Requelh Molema to The Vaal University of Technology will cause a little upset to the team, but we all know Tuks will find a way to pick themselves up regardless. They also lost Poopsie to UJ (The University of Johannesburg) a few years back and despite that the team was crowned the 2008 USSA champions; so who knows what this loss will do for the team.
