Youth Olympic Games – basketball draw results
As we recently noted, the first Youth Olympic Games (“YOG”) will be held in Singapore this year, and will have basketball as one of the sports. The tournament will use FIBA’s relatively new “FIBA 33″ format to introduce it to the global audience.
The draw for the tournament at the Games has now been held. South Africa was drawn in Group D along with Spain, Croatia, the Philippines and the US Virgin Islands (in the Boys grouping). The full draw is as follows:
We’ve had a few questions around how to set up a basketball tournament so we thought it might be good to put some guidance up here.
Why bother with tournaments?
While it can be difficult to set up and run a basketball tournament, always remember why you’re doing it – there’s very little that basketball players love as much as the chance to play! And tournaments are an awesome way to bring the community together, meet new players and develop the game.
Setting up tournaments is a big job, so make sure you cover the basic points first before you start to worry about the details.

The ‘Hood competition is now closed and the winners have been decided.
The competition ran from 1 October 2008 to 31 October 2008 and gave everyone the opportunity to win prizes just by signing up to The ‘Hood [an online community for basketball lovers] and taking part.
We’re excited to announce the winners of the competition now, so here they are: Continue reading »
Reminder – the competition for the NBA/WNBA jersey ends on 31 October 2008, so there are just a few days left to join and get involved!
For those who haven’t joined up to The ‘Hood yet, you’re missing out on a great opportunity to meet other ballers throughout South Africa and share information about your team and upcoming events.
There are now almost 100 people connecting, and there have been some great contributions in the form of blog posts, discussions, photos and videos.
What is greatly encouraging is that many of the discussions centre around the development of basketball, and increasing its exposure within SA. If you have something to add to these discussions, please do so!
The ‘Hood – SA’s online basketball community – is now live, and to celebrate the occasion we’re giving you the chance to win one of three prizes.
The main prize is a personalised NBA/WNBA replica jersey (you get to choose the team, name, number and size). To have a chance to win the jersey, just sign up to The ‘Hood and take part, either by posting your own blog post or contributing a photo or video or event details.
If you don’t have anything specific to say, you can still win just by signing up to The ‘Hood and getting your friends to join too.
The person who gets the most friends to sign up to The Hood (we’ll ask everyone who signs up who referred them – make sure they put your name) can win a Boston Celtics 2008 NBA Champions cap, and a randomly selected member will win a Kobe Bryant 2008 MVP cap.
