US Basketball Coaches begin their clinics in SA

Former President Nelson Mandela said it best, “Education is the most powerful weapon you can use to change the world” and for the last five years, Engen, through the annual hosting of the Basketball Coaching Seminar, has provided amateur basketball coaches in South Africa the opportunity to gain invaluable knowledge of the fundamentals of basketball coaching.

This year, Durban has been selected as the host city for the Engen US Coaches Tour Basketball Coaching Seminar, in association with the Kwazulu Natal Basketball Association, to be held at the University of Kwazulu Natal from 27 – 30 September 2009. Read the rest of this entry →

Her profile reads Assistant Coach, USA All Air Force Basketball Team; Head Coach University of Maryland Eastern Shore; Assistant Coach, University of Maryland, College Park; Assistant Coach, St John’s University; Academic Coach, National Football Foundation and she is currently the President of Future Incorporated.

KZN to host coaching seminar

KZN basketball in conjunction with Engen are going to host some international coaches who will be conducting clinics from Monday 26 – 30 September 2009. These coaches will be working with coaches from various provinces in SA and this will culminate in a coaching clinic for basketball players aged 14 – 18 years.

The Coaching Seminar is a follow-up to the 2008 event and will be targeted at senior South African basketball coaches to be invited by BSA and will cover various coaching techniques with the coaches, led by Joyce Jenkins sharing their expertise and knowledge of the game. In 1994: R21.5 Million – Basketball looks set to take South Africa by storm

A glittering launch of Basketball South Africa was held in Johannesburg on Wednesday, 29 June ’94. A new, improved, unified Basketball South Africa (BSA), complete with International affiliation and Professional league, unveiled its plans, strategies and recently signed sponsors.

No less than twelve confirmed sponsors all committed to a minimum of three years involvement in the sport, with a collective cash value of R21.5 million, basketball looks set to take South Africa by storm.

Mr. Dan Moyo, Chairman of BSA said, “It is a truly great moment for basketball. Many people have put a tremendous amount of effort into ‘getting it together’ and now that we have, the possibilities are endless.” Read the rest of this entry →

An example of basketball development…

With all the various comments that have been flying around the website I decided to share a personal experience I had with regard to what progress in basketball is supposed to look like.

I’ll start by recalling to the best of my ability an experience I had back in 2002. That year, there was a USSASA tournament being held at Wits University where I was coaching the Gauteng provincial boys’ team and at the same time there was the Engen U17 four nation tournament taking place at Wembley in Johannesburg. With the USSASA tournament going well for the Gauteng teams, we decided to take the boys and girls teams to watch the Engen tournament in the evening.
