2009 Pretoria High School League wrap up

June 5, 2009 in Gauteng

The 2009 Pretoria Schools League has proven how much the standard has risen in this game. The battle has always been between your top 3 boys and girls schools (PBHS, Glen and St Albans) as well as (PHSG, DSG and Glen). The tide has however turned gradually over recent years and the big guns are not so big after all. This is a brief summary of how teams have fared this season.

U/14 GIRLS:

Pool A comprised of the “Big Schools” in PHSG, DSG and Glen and also featured the B- team from Willowridge. The first game of the season saw Glen A lose to Willows B and that set the tone for an interesting season all round. DSG has shown consistency in beating all the teams in their group although their game against PHSG exposed their reliance on one player as they won by a lucky 3 pointer in the dying moments. PHSG has shown no consistency as they fought hard for a win against Willows B although they made easy work of Glen A. DSG and PHSG proceed to the semis. Pool B saw Willowridge and Bees make easy work of Glen B, PHSG B and Prestige. Willowridge subsequently gave Bees a hiding to ensure a first place finish in the hope of an “easier” semi-final.

Inconsistency in pool A could work against them but the quality of junior basketball has taught one not to put their head on the block. The main surprise in this group is the shock exit of Glen without winning a single game this year. Willows and DSG look like strong contenders with Bees promising an upset but only time will tell.

Possible semi-final 1: Bees v DSG

Pretoria High Schools League: PBHS does a number on the Champions

June 5, 2009 in Gauteng

The 2009 Schools League started with a huge shock and disappointment as it was discovered that the U/19 Boys defending champions, Rosina Sedibane had failed to register their team for the season. Schools in the weekend pool were not as disappointed as everybody else as they saw an opportunity to make the semi’s in the absence of the powerhouse. Their dreams were however short-lived as the league made a concession which saw the boys from Laudium back in the chase to defend their title.

On Saturday the 30th of May Rosina met their pool rivals PBHS in the final group stage encounter which would decide who got the “easier” semi-final against St Albans. As usual the “counting your chickens before they hatch” exercise gave itself prominence as Rosina promised a walloping of the “small boys” from Brooklyn. Boys High kept their mouths closed and heads up as they relaxed and focussed on the task at hand. The game started off at an electrifying pace, an indication of the kind of game we were in for. Brian Tsabadi marshalled the Boys High troops from the SG position while their point-guard dictated terms for them on offence. Lehlogonolo played the role of the former for Rosina while Bongi (MVP from last season) did the offensive manoeuvring for Rosina from the point position. Read the rest of this entry →

10th National Girls’ Festival

May 27, 2009 in Gauteng

The idea for this festival came from a very well known lady in the Education world, Mrs A Kitto, who was Headmistress of Pretoria High School for Girls from1996 – 2003. At the time, there were many individual tournaments for the different sports but nothing that incorporated all the sports at one event and so Mrs Kitto suggested the idea of the festival and it was immediately welcomed by all. The aim of the festival is for a different all girls’ school to host the event every year at the end of April, beginning May and to include as many sporting codes as possible.  Public all Girls’ schools from around the country are invited to partake in this festival.
