SA eliminated from Youth Olympic Games basketball

The YOG basketball tournament group stages have come to an end after day 5. Eight boys teams and eight girls teams now go forward to play in the quarter finals.

The Philippines beat South Africa 26-12 to seal SA’s boys’ fate as SA bowed out of the tournament with a won-lost record of 0-4.

World Championships 2010 – Team Angola

2010 FIBA WOrld ChampionshipsThe Angolan national team has come a long way since being the first team to face the invincible “Dream Team” at the 1992 Olympic Games. Although Angola finished those games with their best ever Olympic finish (10th place), their performance in FIBA and African championships has steadily improved as time has passed.

As the current African champions, they have won 10 of the last 11 Africa Championships, dating all the way back to 1987 (they finished 3rd in 1997 when Senegal won). They also have had the last five tournament MVP titles come their way (currently held by Joaquim Gomes).

The team has been a bit less successful in the FIBA Championships, placing a team-best 10th at the last tournament in 2006 out of 24 teams. However, this is on the back of tremendous growth in the European level of play and highly supportive basketball structures and resources. Read the rest of this entry →

Singapore’s Youth Olympic Games team – first look

Here’s a first look at the Singapore basketball team that’ll be representing at the Youth Olympic Games in August (I believe they’re the team in white).

Ain’t Youtube great – getting to scout the other teams from the other side of the world :)

The clip is just over 3 minutes long. There are a couple of good moves in there, and the big guy seems to have speed to complement his size. No idea how these guys compare to the teams from other countries though, but interesting nonetheless.
